Page 1 of Any laserDisc collectors here?

Having owned a Laserdisc player ( Sony MDP V9K )for only a year now I have began to build up a quality list of LD`s, I have some rare titles like Fight Club better DD5.1 than the DVD, Willow ( Japanese version with extras, Phantom Menace and Superman IV widescreen. I have about 40 titles. Also being a DVD owner I have noticed alot of people purchased Superman the movie, well done everyone this is probably one of the best DVD`s you can buy. I was so annoyed with Warner for giving the sequels such s***y treatment, I would of loved to hear Superman III in 5.1 but I suppose we will all of the wait for them to release another version with decent extras.

Fight Club Laerdisc has better sound then dvd?! Christ it must have to be spectacular then if thats the case! The dvd has one of the best 5.1 Surround Ex tracks ever,whats so good about the LD version?
A friend of mine has the Pioneer DVL919 combi player-which although a bit bulky-is superb for the outlay.
He too has quite a collection,Star Wars Trilogy,The Phantom Menace,The Lion King(wow,the Dolby 5.1 is unbelievable-c`mon Disney,wheres the dvd?!),Terminator 2,Titanic DTS,plus loads more.Though its a dying format,i think it will always remain for the enthusiasts just like the Sega Dreamcast will always have a place in console gaming history(even though that is also out of production!).
You cant beat the remastered Star Wars on Laserdisc,the Dolby 5.1 Thx audio is spectacular-hearing the sub go for gold as the Imperial Cruiser flys into shot whilst John Williams classic score hammers from the speakers is hair raising stuff indeed! George,hurry with those dvd`s!

The sound for the DVD is compressed to store more data. The LD has a seperate audio track that is not effected by compression.

I have a LD deck too (a relatively lowly, but still decent, Pioneer CLD-515-1) which I actually bought after I got my Samsung 709. My LD collection is mostly stuff that isn`t available on DVD yet, my favourites being Spielberg`s "Duel", and Charles Band`s cheesy 80s fantasy classic "Troll". I`m not holding my breath for a DVD release of either of these two, so it`s nice to have them in a format better than VHS in the meantime.

Also, considering what a pig`s ear the BBC have made of their DVD output to date, it`s well worth having a LD player for the superb Encore releases of series like Blackadder and Dr. Who.

Hi i`ve got a Pioneer CLD925 and about 150 discs including some very good box sets, The T2 box set is miles better than the ultimate edition on DVD for the extras, the only downside is the price the T2 box set cost £100 and my Star Wars Trilogy`s cost £300 for the original set and £150 for the special edition version. All the same I wouldn`t part with my player or any of the discs for any money.

The earlier dts laserdiscs were not compressed like some of the dts dvds
today.The jurasic park dts laserdisc did sound a lot better than the dvd.

Didn`t think there were many of us LD owners left!

I`ve got a Pioneer CLD-2850, it`s about 8 years old, or something...still in perfect nick and I`ve just boxed it up since it was getting a bit dusty! I do still have tons of discs, but I`ll keep them for classic status. Star Wars Trilogy box (the heavy one) can`t be faulted, or Lion King, or T2! I`ll still buy the odd second hand disc if it`s something not out on DVD....

Does anyone else suffer from "sparkles" on their Laserdiscs? I have had two machines now and both have produced good pictures but some discs seem to have a lot of these "sparkles" through both sides. My Pal LD of The Thing is particularly sparkly, as is the first ten mins of Pal Empire Strikes Back and my NTSC Blood Red Evil Dead 2. Anyone know how to eliminate these? The two Pal discs were brand new but still had these? I`ve never heard anyone else with these complaints. Any ideas people? Both players were Pioneers.

Nothing to do with your players. The discs are rotted. Its called laser rot!

They`re not necessarily rotted - it can be caused by dust and dirt on the disc, too. (LDs are analogue, so there`s no fancy error correction like on DVDs.) Try giving them a wipe. Even brand new discs can have dust and other residue from the manufacturing process.
