Page 1 of DVD Recorder Question?????

I am thinking of buying a DVD recorder and have noticed that most of them are +, is there any reason why I should consider buying a - ????

I am just after some opinions on this matter and also some thoughts on the dual layer ones.

The reason why I`m asking is that I bought a DVD player (sony) and paid about £80 for it, then found out it wouldnt play region1 and I couldnt get any hacks to make it play them. I then bought a DVD player from Asda for £22 which plays all regions and all types of disks.

I just didnt want to make the same mistake again

Most decent (Panasonic 8) ) DVD recorders are multiformat these days.
-R discs will play on more DVD players than +R.

to be hones i don`t know why most recorders are +rw. most of the branded recorders are still about the 200.00 mark. Asda are doing a cyberhome dvdrecorder for 80.00 thats all i would pay to be honest. i payed over 300 a few years ago for a philips it lasted till early this year so i went out and bought a mico recorder for 80. Once i set it up and started fiddling about with it as you do the menu and setup was exactly the same as my old philips. goes to show!!!!! but the mico recorder was purchased on ebay and it was multi region out the box.

Most of your cheap DVD recorders are +R/RW,because they`re bascially cheap computer drives in a silver box.
Your quality DVD recorders (Panasonic,Sony etc.) have,historically gone down the -R route,because -R is the format with the highest compatibility with other players.
When -R is the format with the highest compatibility,why the hell bother with +R ??
Phillips were the only `known` manufactuer that chose to go for +R,but their recorders had a nightmarish reliability issue to with it.
Going back two years(ish),the hardware forum was full of people moaning about Phillips DVD recorders.

Most of your CHEAP ones do.

all i am getting at is why pay hundreds of pounds when u can spend next to nowt on one that will work just as well. and the + or - isn`t an issue if your just using it for recording off tv as you watch it from the same machine

Why pay more ?
Because better machines offer better functionality,better quality recording (your cheap recorder often don`t handle RGB in from your SKY box,for example) and better reliability.

For example,the Panasonic machines offer RAM recording,which knocks any +RW stuff into a cocked hat.
Automatic disc space management,timeslip,playback whilst still recording etc.etc.etc.
If all you`re doing is watching and wiping for your own use,then RAM is the best budget option.

They`re not even that much more expensive.
You can get a Panasonic for £120 now.

In my experience,for your own use only,the recording `league table` goes like this.

1/ SKY+
2/ Hard drive recorder
3/ RAM recorder
4/ Any old pile of crap from a supermarket that will record in composite,so is barely better than a VHS.

Where`s the second page of replies gone then eh ??
