Whats the difference ??

It`s only my limited experience & research, but I believe that -R & -RW are less problematic.

Which DVD player do you have?

My Pioneer 717 works best with minus discs from TDK but not Maxell. I`m about to try verbatem.

If you drive will burn either, then not a lot- DVD-RW will have a bit more compatibilty that DVD+RW - I think -RW is able to write quicker too.

Standalone are notoriously picky with re-writables -my LG 4810 will only write to to TDK re-writables. It`s worth taking a look on the manufacturers website to see what brands they recommend-or failing that, look up the database on videohelp.com and see which brands your player is compatible with.

BTW, this only seems to be a major issue with RW, not just write one ( r) discs

DVD-RW comes in 2 forms, Video mode and VR mode. VR mode enables simultaneous recording and playback and non linear editing such as deleting stuff from any place you like (even the middle) and changing the order of the chapters, however VR recordings are not compatible with most dvd players but video mode can but the editing on those is basic.

DVD+RW is essensially a replacement for vhs, nothing more and nothing less (That format is often found on cheap dvd recorders so you would be be better off with DVD-RW)

Editing on -RW(VIDEO) is not just basic,its non existent.
Thats what you use VR mode for,but as correctly pointed out,VR playback is limited to Pioneer players,some other recorders and not much else.
+RW offers zero true editing.It can`t delete sections,it "hides" them so bits are missed out on playback,but no space is reclaimed.
If you buy a cheap and cheerful supermarket recorder,it will use +RW.Most quality makes use -RW.

My Sony RDR-HX510 offers simultaneous playback and record with DVD-RW. It offers both + and - recording and playback, but I`m only using - as that`s what my Pioneer player is compatible with.

Some other makes,like Panasonic,only supply -RW(VIDEO),so no Timeslip there(but you can use RAM for that),but other makes,like Toshiba and JVC have previously offered -RW(VR) with no Timeslip,but they also use RAM.
I believe previous Sony machines not only did not provide Timeslip,they also had inferior +RW editing compared to +RW on Philips machines

There is no difference !!

I understand that some Pioneer recorders can playback and record at the same time using -R/RW, but apart from that it is down to personal preference.

I prefer +R/RW myself and have a Philips DVDR610

Of course there is a difference.
As shown above,-RW can offer TIMESLIP on certain makes.
And -RW also offers editing of identical sophistication to RAM.
+R and +RW are simple formats for those either restricted by budget ,knowledge or both

I`m definitely simple! How do you edit an RW recording to get rid of the adverts? I`ve tried following the Phillips manual for my R70 but I`m hopelessly confused.
