How often does your Sky+ box let you down ?

Wad (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 25th September 2005, 08:46

Had Sky+ for about 6 weeks and was very happy with it initially. Over the last couple of weeks though it`s locked up 3 times so I`ve had to unplug at the mains.

Also, it`s failed to record 2 programsthis week stating there`d been a `technical fault`. How you lot getting on with yours ? Have I got a duff box ?

Mine`s a Pace box by the way.

Hi Wad,

I`ve had my Pace V.2 box for almost 5 months now (I think) and so far so good. I record programmes almost everyday using Series Link and have never had one failed recording on the digibox`s part. The one failed recording I have had was due to a schedule change.

Before the recent EPG update (there is another on the way - part 2) my digibox had never locked up but did afterwards (once). However, after resetting the box everything has been OK since - no problems whatsoever.

It may be worth noting that all digiboxes do need resetting once in a while.

I think I have been very lucky with the box I have as I know there are a fair few `dodgy` ones out there (a.k.a. Sky Dodgybox) :)

Do you have any idea what is causing the box to report "Technical Fault"? I would assume it is referring to its HDD causing problems. Perhaps calling Sky and asking for a replacement box would be a good idea?

Regards,
Adam Walby

Cheers Adam. I spoke to Sky and they suggested a reset, but I`ve got stuff on there that will need archiving off first. I just wondered if the occational problem was par for the course - my old Pace OnDigital box used to hang regularly but I learned to live with it.

I`ve been reading around this afternoon and it seems a fair few folk have experienced similar problems since the recent firmware update.

The only time when I had to reset my box (when about 30% of space went "missing"), it kept all the data/my recorded programmes - ask Sky about it first - you should be ok....

I`ve had my Sky + box ever since they first came on to the market and have had very few problems. There have been a few "failed" recordings but this is usually down to schedule changes/things running very late etc. (and they`re usually repeated anyway ;) ).

Since the recent update I`m having problems (well not really problems - more an inconvenience) with it asking me to put the PIN number in for certain things - but if that`s the only problem, I can cope with it! I must say Sky + is absolutely fantastic - I wouldn`t be without it! :D

Other than the occasional box lock up, nothing major in two years, though I have had to replace the HDD.

Box lock ups are just a fact of life with this type of thing, I`m afraid..it`s basically a PC with knobs on, and we all know our PC never let us down, do they...?? :-)

Thst said, if you start getting many more failed recordings for technical faults, I`d be getting hold of SKY (assuming it is under their warranty).

Since the upgrade mine seems to be forever falling over. It freezes a lot so I have to unplug it. It only freezes when I try to rewind live programmes.

I have also had it when I have been asked for a PIN number when watching a recorded film. I have never used the PIN.

I got asked the PIN yesterday, but that was watching an 8pm movie the following morning (Bourne Supremeacy). Presumably to stop children watching an inappropriate movie parents might have recorded to watch later.

I have also had it when I have been asked for a PIN number when watching a recorded film. I have never used the PIN.

It seems PIN entry is now mandatory for programmes/films with certificates 12, 15 and 18 when viewed outside of the 8:00 pm to 5:00 am watershed.
