Need to play DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs on Samsung 709

Shrinky Dinky (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 3rd September 2005, 16:32

I know it`s a golden oldie, but I`d like to modify my Samsung 709 so it can play DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs. The machine is working perfectly fine so it seems a waste to ditch it in favour of a new one, so has anyone got any advice or info on chipping (which I understand is going to be the only way)?

chipping won`t help, the 709 will never play rw`s & will allyaws be selective with -r/+r`s

sorry :( but your flogging a dead horse with this one. nip to asda & get a pacific for £25 it`ll play em all (but it won`t switch the macro off ;) )

I used to have the 709 myself..Great machine (the pic quality was always outstanding), but the downside is it plays bugger all :(
Like TheOgster said, pick up a cheapo machine...I got the technika from tescos for £25 & i`m sure it would read a book if you shoved it in the tray! :D

The new pacific players are not as good as the early versions ie the old mk1 etc.. ASDA do not have any remarkable players as they once did, for a new player the best on the market against its price tag is the tevion at ALDI for £33 which for the few extra quid you get progressive scan, divx/xvid and qpel. Fot the macrovision just keep yer old samsung 709 just in case :)

I still own a samsung 709 too, and one of the aiwa remotes to switch off the macrovision, but more recently picked up a P & B from a computer fair which has macro disable on it and plays +r/-r etc...

the only problem with the p&b`s is they are also fairly picky with some "original" dvd`s, as stated above the divx player from aldi is very good (but plays video poorly if you are forcing a pal conversion to ntsc) the cello machines from sainsburys & kwiksave are also very good (&around the £25 mark)

i also still own one of my original 709`s ;) & an m105.

I had a 709; First it got relegated to the bedroom after I got a E55 DVD recorder for the lounge. Then I flogged it on e-bay and got £26 for it. I then bought a Panasonic S27 for £40 from Boots------> Miles better!!!

The technology has obviously come on a long way...no problem with CD-Rs (the 709 was SUPPOSED to play CD-RWs - but was too jerky to watch), no problem with branching DVDs etc. I got the S27 so I could watch RAM disks recorded on the E55 but any modern DVD player will probably be better than the 709.
