My Sky + input for recording is gone

delboy20 (Competent) posted this on Friday, 5th August 2005, 15:32

Anyone know if its possible to fix this? Nothing wrong with the dish or signal strength, we lost power this morn so maybe that had somethin to do with it?

Do you mean the record facility doesnt work when you push the button? When they installed mine last week they had to phone up for the recording to be activated. Worth giving them a call to see if they need to redo it.

no its totally gone, even the signal test screen shows input 2 as nothing, its not reading the signal through the cable, i even swapped feeds so i know they`re both ok, i prob need to get a new box >:(

Wouldn`t be so quick to blame it on the box myself. I take it you`ve tried the obvious-unplug, leave for 20 seconds-plug back in?? You could try re-setting the box-of course, this would mean you`d lose all of your current recordings, but it could save you buying a new box.

When you say you`ve swapped the cable over, you mean that you`ve taken the feed to input 2 and put it onto input 1 and input one continues to show you a signal? The tuner could have failed I guess, but it is unusual.

One last thing, you mention the `input for recording` -the Sky + box can record of both inputs (hence why you can record two things at once) so you should still be able to record via input 1 to the HDD.

Sounds like a dead hard drive, same thing happened to me a couple of months back after a power cut here.

If it is dead then it is very easy to fit a new and bigger one.

I fitted a 160gb Samsung drive and its superb, runs cool and no problems so far, took me about 15 mins ( fitted twice in this time as I didi it wrong 1st attempt ).

If you were still running the crap Maxtor 40gb then this problem will come as a bonus for you and give you the opportunity to fit that bigger one you were promising yourself.

Quick way to check is to switch off the machine at the mains and swap round the LNB inouts so that input 1 is now getting a feed from the other LNB lead and so on, this will show that it`s the hard drive and not the LNB inputs if you know what I mean.

Any other held needed just email me.

:-)

I did a system reset and it seems to have cured the problem, only bad thing is all my recordings are gone. I might upgrade the hard drive, any tips on which hd to go for? How easy is it to change? Thanks for the help

Glad the reset worked, it`s a doddle to upgrade - have a look at this site for help -

http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=156344

It will list all the info you need, I personally went for a Samsung 160gb ( can`t remember exact model either 1614N or 1604N ) drive as it runs the fan all the time and is cool and very quiet, I am sure it`s the heat that kills the Maxtor`s.

I`m sure mine went the same way as yours with more and more faults until it died, so be on the lookout for losing all your recordings.

Planner rebuilds can also cause problems, I think I read somewhere it can only be done twice.

Found the info about the hard drive I fitted.

I used this in my Pace V2 Sky+ box - Samsung Spinpoint P80 160Gb 2MB Cache 7200RPM HDD OEM SP1604N.

:D

If it`s working ok now, I doubt it`s a HDD problem, and the syptoms for a HDD on the way out aren`t really what you`ve described-it`s more like boxes freezing for no reason, recordings failing, stuff like that. The bigger HDD is a great upgrade, though I`d go for the Maxtor over the Hitachi, but that is just personal preference (The old Hitachi made IBM `Deathstar` drives keep we well away from any of their HDD products these days!!)
