How to set up Dolby Digital on Toshiba 32ZD98B?

PaulBu (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 13th July 2001, 17:58

I apologise if this seems to be the same question asked elsewhere as I am still a new comer to the forum and still don`t know the best way to continue threads...anyway

I have connected my new Toshiba DVD SD210E to my 32ZD98B Toshiba TV using scart to scart on EXT3 and co-axial for sound, but I am a little confused about setting up the TV for Dolby digital sound.
In the AV connection Menu for the TV, if I setup the Digital Input as EXT3 (same as the scart) then I get no sound. I only get sound if I set it to EXT2 but is this giving me Dolby Digital?
If I set up EXT 1 I have the same problem when selecting EXT1 from the menu...any ideas?

I don`t have either, but the physical connection is right. the digital sound would be something like using coaxial not using scart, as it will give u stereo nicam sound. The purpose of coaxial is to carry DD sound only not picture, I presume there must be a menu in your TV setup

I don`t have the Tosh T.V but I set them up for a living, I`ve not done one for a while but I`ve got a couple of ideas.

1) There might be a scart socket tosh recomend, have a look in the instructions.
2) Your lead might be faulty, try using a normal phono lead just to test this.
3) You may have to set your DVD to output Dolby Dig, have a mess around in the dvd menu.

You should be able to test if your watching in Dolby by switching over channels and then coming back to it. (message will appear at top of screen)

Sorry if these don`t work, I`ts hard remembering without the stuff in front of you!

I hope you get it sorted

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, and I have now solved my problem. Noone told me that the co-axial cable is uni-directional! 50/50 chance and I put it the wrong way round! Pity it says nothing in the instructions, and the Hi-Fi dealer said nothing, well what do I expect for £70 worth of cables (including Scart).
Anyway I can now sit down and enjoy the full blown Dolby Digital of my Toshiba setup.
I am not going to tell my wife that I made such a mistake, she thought the sound was good even without the digital!
