New replacement DVD remote wont work: Do I need to set something up?

RSV_Ecosse (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 14th July 2005, 09:39

I bought a replacement DVD remote control for my Hitachi HTDK170.

It`s almost identical to the old one, apart from a couple of buttons, but on the rear of it, the model number is exactly the same.

The problem is, it does absolutely nothing when you try and operate the DVD player with it. DVD player works fine using the controls on the front, but remote doesn`t seem to do anything. I`m wondering if there is anything I need to "syncronise" or whatever, with the new remote since it wasn`t the original one that came with the package?

I know its a possibility that the new remote is faulty, but I would like to think it wasn`t.

Any advice?

I bought it from here, btw:-

If I were you I would go right back to them and ask them what to do and if you need to set it up (sometimes you need to hold down buttons, keep a list of things in your head whilst you get to the other button before the first instruction is forgotten, etc)

But this should have been shown on the pack, or instructions or the website or somewhere. Give them an email and if it still doesn`t work ask for your money back, pop into Tescos or your preferred supermarket chain and treat yourself to a universal RC such as the RCX4 for about a tenner.

(umm - you did remember the batteries right?) :)

Hi folks, thanks for replying.

I`ve searched through the user manuals and no where does it say anything about setting up a remote. I guess the new replacement one could be faulty, but it seems like a bit of a coincidence that it does exactly the same as the old one, which is nothing!!!

I had to order a replacement, because the wife dropped the old one in the kitchen sink ( dont ask!! ). I tried to dry it out using a hairdryer at low heat, and it seemed free of moisture, but I think the water must have knackered the circuits inside.

The whole TV/DVD/VCR package is still under warranty, I`ve got a bloke coming on Tues to check it all out. I only ordered a replacement remote instead of getting a Tech out to look at it, as I thought for the sake of £30, It would be a simple fix to get a new remote. Little did I know!!!

Tune in between a couple of stations on a radio set to AM/MW until you hear the white noise (hissing ect) hold your remote a few feet away and press the buttons you should hear a clicking noise coming from your radio, this indicates that the remote is probal ok.

Droped my freeview one down the toilet into a pot full of p*** last Christmas, pulled it out and rinsed it under the cold tap,(it never worked)took it to bits and dried all the insides with kitchen towels then leave all the bits to dry out over night on a kitchen towel, worked great next day and still does,no way was I gonna spend £20 on a replacment. :) :) :)

If you have a camcorder (or digital camera with screen) point the remote into the lens and operate it. You should see it flashing on the camera display if it is working as camera imaging sensors pick up infra red. I find this to be a very reliable way to check remote controls.

Yeah, tried the remote looking through my camcorder and its showing the IR working fine, so either the remote isn`t the correct one, albeit it says it is on the back regards the model number.....or there`s something up with the DVD player.

Waiting at the moment for a tech bod to come round and have a look at it under warranty. Hopefully he can sort it out.

Tech bod has just been and sorted it. The old remote`s battery terminal thingies ( little springs inside where the batteries go ), just needed pulling out a bit further so the batteries actually made contact. Wish I had tried that in the first place......DOH!!!

Replacement, new remote will be sent back for a refund.

He said that even though the remotes are badged as "HITACHI", the company themselves dont actually make them, he guessed the internal circuits must have been slightly different, and thats why it wasn`t compatible with the DVD player.

Just glad its all working correctly.
