Page 1 of Virtual Dolby? 100hz?
Hardware Forum
two fairly simple questions:
Im either going to get this Thomson 28WH403S or this Philips 28PW6518
The Standout feature on the Thomson is that its 100hz. The standout on the Philips is Virtual Dolby. So:
1) Is virtual dolby much better than Nicam Stereo (I currently use a yamaha amp and Mission 702e speakers to listen to my telly, if that makes any difference)
2) Is the 100hz the more worthwhile.......uhm......feature......?
3) Which one would you get and have you any other recommendations?
Cheers chaps

Your sound is already sorted so emphasis has to be on pic quality - on the face of it you`d expect the 100Hz flicker free blah blah blah to get the edge here but according to the picture grading specs on the Comet site the Philips wins this anyway. The connectivity grading raised the eyebrows but once again although the Thomson seems to win this, they both have 2 scarts but only the Philips has the RGB one. I`d definitely choose the Philips.
Pete :)
Ive got two Philips TVs, the main one is the 32PW6408, and in the bedroom
we have the 24" version of the set you mention Philips 28PW6518, ours is the
24PW6518.
I have to say its a great little telly, great picture, very vivid colours, excellent sound.
Probably a bit better than our main set.
I know that there are a lot of anti Philips TV guys out there, but I`m very pleased
with my sets. :)
Cheers guys!
The problem with reading reviews on t`internet is that they are always
`MY TV IS TEH ROXxOR!!!!!!1111` 10/10
or
`MY TV IS TEH SUXXX!!!!!11111111111` 1/10
Its hard to get anything objective. Yeah, picture quality would seem the best bet. I suppose the only thing I can do to be sure is actually get off my arse, find a comet and give them both the pepsi challenge. Go to a shop...? Unheard of!

Did you make a decision?
I checked the Thomson out and it does have one RGB scart:

Dear Sir,
Thank you for contacting the THOMSON Helpline.
In reply to your question, the 28WH403S has two scart sockets, of which
one is RGB compatible.
Kind regards,

A helpful quick response.
Your post got me thinking about a new TV, and I am quite tempted by the Thomson 100HZ as I have had a Thomson for 4 years, and think its excellent. It will also work well with my Thomson DHD4000 PVR Freeview, which is also excellent.
Cheers
I havent made my decision *yet*!
There is a big comet about 20-25 minutes from us so im going to go in, take a few DVDs, and put the two through their paces. I`ll probably get over on saturday or maybe the sat after (work, work work...:(), but I will certainly post back with my findings!
Thats a good tip on the RBG scart, nice one. On paper, im certainly veering towards the Thomson and if I cant find time to go to the store, its probably the one I will plump for, but, like I said, hopefully I will be able to see them in action and know more from there.
Thanks guys. Any more opinions/info would be appreciated 8)

Dont reject the Philips without having a good look & listen.
As stated in my previous post I have two Philips sets.which I am very pleased
with, most of the time used for watching TV via a NTL Samsung digi box.
BUT, yesterday I took delivery of the Roger Waters in the flesh live dvd.
I played itthrough through the 24PW6518 set.
I have to say the sound of this little set was stunning & picture quality
superb, and it was only being played through a cheapy DVD player
£35 Yamada set hooked up to the TV via scart to RGB.
Like I said, give the Philips a good test drive, IMO if you find that the Thompson
is better than th PW6518 you will have got yourself a very good TV
Good luck
