Advice needed

Hi,

Recently bought the Sony DVP-400D with inbuilt dolby decoder, my tv is a JVC 28WFR1EK with virtual surround sound function in built. I can connect up two speakers to the back of my tv which will use my tv speakers as center speakers. The problem i have is, should i turn off my tv`s virtual surround sound function and use the dvd`s dynamic sound function or should i use a combination of the two ? Also, when i do get around to having an amplifier and speakers, should I connect the amp to my tv or dvd player ? Sound is becoming increasingly important to me. Does anyone know of a good website that can explain the concepts of home cinema in a simple and understandable way ? Thankyou

Gavin

Gavin,

this site might help. It`s quite big and there are some good diagrams...

Regarding your current setup, I would forget the DVD`s function and just let the TV do its thing. Try them together and see which one sounds best though I just think it would be confusing as effectively they are both trying to do the same thing....fool you into thinking the sounds are coming from multiple directions. Trust your ears.

When you get an amp and speakers connect the DVD player to the amp. This will make the sound on your TV redundant. You have a couple of choices here, I`ll try and keep it simple..

1. Let the DVD player decode the surround sound and run interconnects into an amp which allows a 6 channel input, some Dolby Pro-logic ones will allow this and they are often quite cheap.

2. Get an amp that decodes Dolby Digital and connect it to the DVD player by a digital cable. This is the simplest (only 1 cable) and at the moment the price of reasonable av amps are hitting rock bottom (think Kenwood, Yamaha and Sherwood).

Hope this helps...good luck!!!!
