Amp advice needed

albini13 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 4th July 2001, 09:13

Hi,

I`ve just bought the Sony dvp-ns400. It has a dolby 5.1 decoder inbuilt. What are the best priced amp and speakers available for it ? Also does anyone know whether this DVD player is multi-regional ? Can it VCD`s ? One more question, what are SVCD`S, and why do people want to play mp3 through there DVD player, will a Hi-Fi not support them ? Thankyou

Gavin (sorry for the 20 questions thing !)

right.firstly, ignore the decoder in the dvd.whilst the sony players have some of the best decoders in the business, they are by no means a match for a good amp/reciever.
yes the sony will play vcd and svcd(vcd with enhanced capacity hence better quality-still not as good as dvd).the sony will not play mp3 discs burned via a pc,so you`ll have to buy your own mp3!
as for an amp and speakers, try the denon 1801 or even better the yamaha ax620.both are in the £400 region, and will complement the performance of your sony perfectly.as for speakers, try the tannoy mercury mx4 spaeker pack, two floorstanders a centre and two bookshelf rears.this`llcost you around £500.
otherwise scour some copies of what hifi or home entertainment for some good reccomandations.

hope this is of some help
