Choice of Audio Cable

rogd0262 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 30th June 2001, 00:51

I am about to invest in a Home Cinema System (Sony HTK-475), having purchased a DVD player with built in DD decoder and 5.1 Ch Out (Sony DVP-NS400).

My question is what is the pros and cons of connecting the DVD player and the Receiver (with 5.1 Ch In) with the following audio cables:

a.) 6 Phono analogue cables (5.1 Ch)
b.) a coaxial digital cord
c.) an Optical digital cord

How do I get the best sound quality outta the system?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Try all 3 and whichever one sounds best to you is what you should use. You may find that there wont be much between them really. There will be no noticable difference between the digital cables at least (no matter what some people may say!).

A possible problem with using the 6 phono cables though is that they can be susceptable to interferance, whereas the digital cables are impervious to this.

It really does just boil down to what sounds best to you though, so my advice is try them all.

Blazin` is right - try them all.

Personally, I`d stick to the digital route though - the 5.1 hook up is fairly superfluous if you have the technology on the amp to do the decoding for you. It also adds another process into getting the sound from your DVD to your speakers (ie your player has to convert the signal into analogue to split it into each of the channels).

At least with the digital route the bitstream from DVD player to amp is reasonably pure, leaving your amp to concentrate on decoding and zapping the sound out to the speakers.

Happy experimenting (psst, coaxial does the biz for me)
