probs with 2 discs with alba rdvd 1001

Got this from argos expecting to be able to copy home video`s then play them either on pc or dvd player, only to find out that you have to compress them with dvd shrink then burn them again...been in constant contact with alba technical team and they say it`s a compression problem..seems like you have to make another copy of a disc to be able to play it on anything other than the dvd recorder... anyone else had this prob with other dvd recorders as will be trying another this weekend the goodmans from argos. I have also had probs with it not recognising the video cam when plugged into the the front composite ports. This I solved with using a scart connection in the back from the cam..I am not sure what to do as all I wanted to do was copy the dvds to +r`s then copy them for the family on the pc to -r`s...looks like i am going to have to stick with video tapes until the problem is solved..any ideas anyone to get round this problem other that trying to find a dvd player that will play the discs as soon as recorded...I cannot recommend this recorder due to the time that I have spent trying to sort something this simple out.... :(

Your advice from Argos sounds like utter boll*cks to me. Have you tried making a "straight" recording - i.e. just recording a tv programme - on a DVD+R? Don`t try using +RWs because they have weird menuing systems. Do a straight +R and finalize it (you have to finalize a +R to use it in any other machine), then test the disc elsewhere. If the Alba is making incompatible discs, then there`s a problem with it.

I was reading on another forum where someone was aksing how youa ctually finalize a disc on one of these machines, they could find no mention of it in the manual apparently.

I guess this could well explain why the machine is £99 and sold in Argos.....

hi
the problem is that the discs need finalising but the set up menu will not let you enter the finalise disc feature as it is greyed out
to overcome this
load disc you`ve just recorded
press stop button twice
enter set up menu
edit- finalise disc (this option now available)
the player will now finalise the disc (may take a little while)
your disc will play on most dvd players and your pc

mine does
