Plasma - is this a good time to buy?

David Beckett (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 21st April 2005, 16:26

I am having my bedroom decorated next week and have been looking to buy a plasma for ages; as my room will be completely emptied, that would seeem to be the perfect time to buy and install a plasma. However, with HDTV somewhere on the horizon, is now a good time to buy a plasma screen or is it worth waiting until HDTV is a reality?

I don`t want to break the bank and £2K is my limit for screen, delivery, cables, wall mount etc. and have been looking at the LG RZ42PX11.

All advice will be greatly appreciated. :)

The LG make no note of wether it has HDMI or DVI with HDCP nor does it say wether it can do 720p at 50Hz. That will be needed to do Sky Hi-Def. It does not even give a resoloution. Look for a set that has the "HD Ready" logo to cover yourself.

Leave it until after Xmas before splashing out. The industry needs to get its arse in gear about standards yet, and until we see the whites of HDTV`s eyes (when Sky starts its service), your guess is as good as mine.

That`s what I was doing last year! I wonder if I will ever get one or if it will always be a case of `wait until...` until you take the plunge. :/

How much better is HDTV than what we have now and if I bought a non-HD ready plasma, would it be obsolete when HDTV is introduced or will it still be able to screen the signal but not in HD?

How much better is HDTV than what we have now

imagine a 42" pc monitor running games @ 600x800, then bump it up to 1024 x 768 & thats about the difference :D personaly i would wait & see what happens, but when it comes to standard dvd`s i don`t know if you would notice a difference, but having never seen a hd setup properly i couldn`t be sure :)

Standard DVD will still be at the same resoloution so there will be no differance. When we get HD DVD/Blue Ray (about a year) then there will be a hugh differance.

If you want to see Hi-Def running and I hope I am not breaking any rules here, most Sevenoaks have Hi-Def running in the shop so you can see the differance and what you will be able to get in about a year. Give your local one a call to make sure they have it up and running.

Thanks for all the advice - I might just wait until I see for myself what HD is like although I don`t actually watch much TV - my viewing is pretty much limited to sport and DVDs so if a HD ready plasma is going to bump up the price by more than HD is worth to me then I could forseeably give HD a miss altogether!

Ok, some sports look poor on plasma. The Hitachis are the most forgiving I have come across. Sport in Hi-Def is stunning.

HD-DVD/Blue Ray will look fantastic. If you can hang on for a bit the prices on HD ready sets will fall as more of them come out.
