Newbee questions about DVD Recording

The Great Gonzo (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 16th April 2005, 22:02

I`ve just got my first DVD Burner. I understand that it is better no avoid cheap DVD-Rs.
What brand of discs are the best?

Thanks in advance

hi, i`m using datwrite yellows & ridisc for general recording & verbatim
for my important home video stuff, not had any probs with any of them.
have a look on SVP they have loads to choose from and give plenty of info about each disc, think it`s best to stick with the G04 dye or better. :)

Thanks for the reply. I had seen posts reference prefered disc types before but not really paid attention (not have a burner at the time). I knew there was a certain dye type that was prefered.

Thanks for the info. I`ve just checked out the retailer you mentioned (2nd time lucky - svp.com appears to be a French Opticians website!). I`ll buy some discs to night and hopefully avoid burning some coasters!

it`s worth siging up for the SVP email updates, get lots of offers and every so often a 99p P&P weekend comes along, usually have to spend over £30 tho. :)

You won`t go far wrong with any media these days, though it`s probably a good idea to go for discs with a Ritek dye (The G04 as mentioned previously). That said, I`m happily using a x8 Ridisc (Blue/siver top) which, despite the name DON`T have the Ritek dye.

If you want the ultimate in quality, then look for TDK`s that are made in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. Beware though-not ALL TDK`s are TY`s, you need to check the packaging for `made in Japan`.

Basically, you should probably look at the price-£20/100 for x8 seed discs is your `low water mark`- anything under that, you might be buying problems.

Another thing-I`m assuming by `DVD Burner` you are talking about a PC based one, not a standalone recorder? I ask this because standalones tend to be a little more `choosy` about what they will write to-not so much on write once discs, but certainly on re-writables. As a `For Instance`- I`ve got an LG burner in PC and a standalone LG recorder- the PC based drive would write to a slice of bread if you cut it to the right size, but on the standalone, the only re-writables it will work ok with are TDK`s.

So, if it`s a standalone, don`t just buy a load of re-writables, see what works first!!

Where to buy from? Depends what quantities you are going to buy in. I`ve always found the best deals at the computer fairs-If you do run into problems, you`ve got somewhere to go back to. Check to see if you`ve got a local fair-there will be several vendors flogging them, and each one will be trying to undercut the other. The guy I always buy mine from also has a local retail shop and gives the same prices `over the counter` as at the shows.

I use Datawrite Titaniums in my PC & Ritek in my standalone recorder.

My Panny E65 didn`t seem to like Datawrites for some reason...

SVP do a cheap sample selection box so that you can try different discs to see which your system is happy with.

Thanks for all the advice. The sample box sounds a good idea.

I am talking about a PC DVD burner at the moment, but I will be buying a DVD Recorder as soon as I decide which one to buy. (I`ll probably be asking advice here about that soon!)

I`ll buy a sample box and wait until I buy my DVD Recorder as well before investing in a stack of discs - just to make sure I get some that are compatible with both.
