mikeyboy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 16th April 2005, 13:39

i have some 5.1 surround sound speakers with subwoofer. My dvd player and tv only have 2 outputs.i.e for 2 speakers.
Is there any way i can connect my 5.1 speakers to my dvd player or tv? maybe by way of an adaptor or anything?
Or are they only connectable via a 5.1 dvd player/tv etc?

Hello Mikeyboy,

You`re going to need some kind of amplifier to drive those speakers. Even if your DVD player had 5.1 audio sockets, they would be low level (line output) power only. If you look on Ebay under `Surround Sound Amplifier` you should be able to find what you need.

Good luck, Jim.

thanks for the advice jim.
My 5 speakers connect to the subwoofer(which has an on/off, main volume & sub volume switches), and the subwoofer has 3 connections coming from it which connect to either the player or as you stated the receiver. The connections are SUB/CEN (ORANGE), FR/FL (GREEN), RR/RL (BLACK), and have plugs like a earphone socket type.
Would more or less any amplifier have these connections as looking on ebay a lot of the amps have 5.1 sockets?
I`ve never connected or used 5.1 speakers before so i`m a novice as you can tell!!!
help is appreciated.

i have 5.1 dolby digital speakers and subwoofer it was very easy to set up i don`t know which make you have mine are a pacific from asda which i £34.00 for connected to dvd and tv set by phono leads the kind most stereos are connect up by my tv is conncted to the aux on subwoofer input mean i acn have it on whatever im watchin ie sky. video tape ect my dvd is in the dvd input on subwoofer as i have dts which is a better signal on its own hope this helps. or pahaps you can tell me what make you have?

the earphone socket is only for connecting cd/mp3/walkman players to don`t worry about that.

if you did`t get phono leads with it you can get some very cheaply from any good electrical store or asda/walmart as that sounds like thats what you need

the memory of you blooms like a flower in the garden of my heart
