Need a new telly!

Not fair!!

Sitting down to watch The Grudge last week with the g/f, since I told her it was creepy and thought it`d give her a good scare, switched it on and after 5mins it was me that jumped when the back of the set burst into a shower of orange sparks and started crackling very loudly. Argh... now sat with an old 20" set poached off my brother, and need to buy a new set.

SO...

Advice needed! Looking to spend up to about £1200, obviously the bigger the set the better. But do I go for CRT, LCD, plasma or rear projection? Had a look in some of the usual places - Dixons, John Lewis and the like and maybe its the way they`ve been set up but I`ve yet to see an LCD or plasma that had a decent picture, always appear too jagged or pixelly, rather than a nice smooth CRT picture like I`m used to. And what about 100Hz sets, would that be a wise one to consider? Dixons had a 42" Techwood plasma for around £1299 that didn`t look too shabby but I`m not familiar with the name.

I`ll be the first to admit I`m not a technical bod so any suggestions would be appreciated...

£1200 is just a wee bit `in-between`,in my opinion.
You`ve got more than enough for a cracking 100hz CRT,like the Toshibas for around £800-£900.
You haven`t quite got enough for a decent make of plasma/LCD.
I,personally,wouldn`t touch dubious/lesser makes of plasma/LCD with a bargepole.
I would always feel I was `making do`,when saving a few hundred more would get me quality.
If it were my £1200 I`d use it as a down-payment on this;

I bought a Philips 32inch 100hz 9309 for £585 deliverd from soundandvisiononline.co.uk

Many have bad things to say about Philips, and I would agree there customer service is awful, but there TV`s in my opinion and all the magazines are superb. I did want the 9509 as its newer tech and looks sexy but was £800. Thats what i would buy.

One thing worth doing is buying from Currys online or comet or anywhere that offers a seven day return for any reason, then you get to play first, it can be a pain sending back and fourth big TV`s but is the only way to check out the picture with your own source.

I read so many reviews and the Philips and a Panasonic (not sure of model but can find out) kept coming top.

Philips is worth looking at as long as you expect a battle if anything goes wrong, for me, i dont mind a battle if i have to have one.

www.homecinemachoice.com has reviews i think.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Was poised to buy the Philips 32PW9509C then thought sod it, I`ll splash out a bit extra and get a 36" set.
Had a look at www.avforums.co.uk and a few websites, and think I`m going to take a chance on the Toshiba 36ZP48, seems a decent CRT set that I can get for around £875.

Anyone tried it?

I only researched 32inc sets when i bought my Philips, i think homecinemachoice.com
has reviews on the set your looking at if you have not already read them of course.

Nick.

I would also mention weight.

If you get the 36inch CRT just remember it will be more than 10 stones. I got a 32inch JVC which need 2 strong guys to lift it (Well 1 strong guy and me!!)

Good luck and mind your back.

That will be a massive box a 36inc!

i would reccomed (price permitting) buying from somewhere that will exchange for any reason, gives you a chance to try another set if you dont like it for any reason.

I know currys and Comet do, other online retailers may charge.

Daz

I got a Tosh 36ZP48 from empiredirect just after xmas. Nice telly!!

I was gonna just go for a different make, but the speakers were on the sides of most others (Making a 32" WIDER than the Tosh 36" ZP)

I does weigh a ton (75 kgs actually) and the stand weighs in at around 25 kgs!

Make sure you get the ZP48 and not the ZP46 as the 46 doesn`t have surround sound.

Can`t fault it - more scarts and inputs than you can shake a stick at!

Good luck.
