Sky+ Advert - Picture Quality

BADMOFO (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 19th March 2005, 10:29

I watched an advert for Sky+ this morning, the one where Ronaldinho scores at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League (toe pokes it into the net). The advert was on Sky Sports 1. The picture quality for this advert was far better than the live feed of the game. I have noticed this before for adverts but this particular advert seemed the best quality I`ve seen for a footy game.

Obviously Sky want to make their adverts look good but this suggests to me that we could now be getting a lot better picture quality in live games than having to wait until High Def comes in. I suppose it`s all down to Sky giving us quantity and not quality?

All down to bitrate, and the more channels Sky wants to cram in, the lower overall bandwidth they have to do it, so the more compression and worse the artifacts become.

They have been upping the bitrate on some channels, I heard they did it for Sky One at the very least, in the last year. But some channel elsewhere will be suffering because of it, hopefully not one anybody watches, :)

Yup, and those of us with Sky+ started to notice recordings taking almost twice the space they did before.
(eg: what was 3% in some cases would now take 6%, sometimes take 5%!)

The thing is though, and no one else seemed to notice it until I told them....I actually noticed major artifacts on my plasma *after* they upped the bitrate! :o

Thought it was just mine, but after pointing it out to a few lads at work, the instore LCD showed it, as did two others Plasma`s at home.

It`s either reverted back or they`ve stabilised it somehow...recording take the same space they used to and me piccy is ok again :D
