Quick SKY+ question

bowfer (Elite) posted this on Monday, 14th March 2005, 11:34

My wife says our SKY+ is missing the end of programmes.
I`ve yet to see any evidence of it myself, but she swears blind she recorded a couple of programmes only to be infuriated when it stopped `short`.
Anyone else noticed this ?
Any suggestions ?
:/

There is an option to over run the programmes by a specific number of minutes at the start and end. Maybe this is set wrong - mine is at automatic.

Righto,I`ll check that.
It`ll be at the engineer`s default setting, whatever that is.
Cheers for that. :D

Some programmes (especially ones early in the morning) just start late (and so you miss the end)

But yeah, always add at least two minutes to the end of the programme, just in case...

The SKY engineer specifically told me that the `beauty` of SKY+ is that it records the programme, not the time.
He told me that if the programme starts late,or ends late,SKY+ will still record it properly.

Was he talking utter bollox then ????? :/

Is it no better than a plain old timer recording on a video ??? :/

Be careful with it though..take this scenario (It could be any combination of channels)

recording BBC1 20.00 -20.30
recording ITV1 20.00-20.30
recording BBC2 20.30-21.00

If you change the default setting to `over-run` each recording, an you`ve got another recording scheduled to start immediately afterward, then you`ve got a problem-the `Program clash` screen will appear asking you to cancel one or other recording to allow the new one to start.

Not 100% sure what will happen if you ignore th program clash screen-whether the new recording will just start when one of the previous one reaches it`s end, I don`t know, but by tinkering, you could finish up missing the beginnings of programmes at the very least.

Can;t say i`ve noticed programme ends getting cut off, except on the odd occsion where it has started late and the EPG has not been updated.

If ever I`m recording something that is due on after a live event, I always set my recordings manually, adding plenty of time onto the end.

Emily, that collection of recordings should not bring up the clash banner as the shows do not clash.Sky+ ignores padding when programming the planner.
The Auto setting adds 2 minutes to the start and end of each recording.Emily`s above example would not clash, but Sky+(if its working right) will ignore the end padding of one and the start padding of another so that recording begins bang on time.
However,at various times of the day, especially after 8pm,channels,usually ITV, often over run by a small amount and if you lose the padding you may lose the end of the recording.
Sky+ WILL follow schedule changes, but obviously only if the EPG is updated in time.I have seen ITV changes go without update a few times.

In two words, f***in pish.

I tried to record a whole bunch of Bill Oddie the other Sunday and guess what, the last two minutes of every recording was missed even with the two minute before / after setting on the Sky+ settings.

Even though the Sky+ box was left on that channel for the six hours of the broadcast and no channel changes or clashes were possible it still pannied up the last two minutes of each and every show.

The theory may state that it will do what the "Engineer", or monkey with a ladder :) ,says in reality the opposite is true at times.

Have you complained to SKY about it Choagy ?
If so,what did they say/offer to do ?

I haven`t complained to SKY too often but, when I have,it`s been taken about as seriously as Hearts` complaint to the SPL..... :/ ;)

We have had sky+ for almost 2 years now and do not find this, but we used to.

We (after several experiences like yourself) took it off automatic and simply got it to add 5 mins at the beginning at 10 mins at the end. Since then we haven`t really had any problem with overrun cut-off. As a previous post said though, be wary and have your wits about you if programming something that follows a live event. Be prepared for a possible problem.

Our bug-bear is why does sky+ seem to add recordings to our planner which we never asked for ? Weird. Also, recently we noticed series link programmes had disappeard from the planner. Bl**dy thing. We had watched comic relief fame academy from the very start (sad, i know) but as the final was not called fame academy (was part of red nose friday) we appeared to have NOT recorded it on our series link planner. I can hear all u sky critics laughing right now after reading that. Someone was not thinking there, and it wasn`t just us me thinks....

Anyway, check all your settings and play around a bit with the option to add minutes at the beginning & the end. It sorted us out. One helpful (yes, helpful) sky rep` told us that channels like BBC and ITV are `sponsored` channels and have to transmit something to tell your sky+ box that the programme is starting. (by sponsored he meant `contracted`) Other lesser known channels are not obligated to transmit this code and may result in incorrect / missed ends / beginnings. Like i say, add minutes to the end in an attempt to alleviate your problem.

Repeat after me "It`s better than vhs."
