Fixing a coaxial cable help?

Daywalker (Competent) posted this on Monday, 28th February 2005, 20:46

Hi,
the BNC connector has come off my coaxial cable, and I need to either rewire the BNC male connector, or attach a new phono adaptor to the end. Now I have cut the coaxial cable and a phono cable, and connected the outter wires together and the inner wire together quickly, but there is not image coming through. Anyone know what I am doing wrong or if they have any tips?
Thanks,
Phil

I really am at a loss as to what your trying to achieve by mixing cable types & connectors that carry two different types of signals.

You need to have a BNC connector on the end of the coax. its as simple as that.

It can be as complex as this:

Coax is designed to carry UHF signals at a level of microVolts, it has a impedence that is designed to match the input of the equipment that it connects to (as does the actual BNC connector) so that as little of the signal is lost.

Phono leads carry lower frequency signals around the 1V level, theres little or no need to have any form of impedence matching & the loss of the signals its supposed to carry is negligable.

When you put the BNC plug together, you must make sure that the braiding does not come into contact with the centre core & that each section is more advanced than the previous layer see the rough cross section below.

---Insulation (Brown or White)

Copper Braiding\Shield

Core Insulator (Clear Plastic)

Hope it helps.
