Sony RDR-GX300 to be replaced by RDR-GX210

GCXBoy (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 22nd February 2005, 14:00

Just over 6 months after the GX300 was launched Sony will discontinue this model & replace it with the GX210.
The new features are:

1. Slightly slimmer design (77mm height)
2. i-link/DV terminal
3. zoom function
4. reduced RRP of €350 (£249.99), most online retailers will give at least 10% discount.
5. For sale date is April/May (It may be launched in Germany in March).

Many who purchased the GX 300 must be very angry with Sony as it was only released in September/October 2004. Sony has set a record for the quickest ever update of a DVD recorder - 7 months.

Many German online retailers are already advertising the GX210 & you can get further details from www.avland.co.uk

Are you sure this is a direct replacement - seems odd to go down in numbers.

Perhaps this is a reduced functionality model.

Doesn`t bother me - I have a GX300 and am perfectly happy with it. New models / reduced prices happen all the time!

This is probably a good thing - 300s could be well cheap soon :)

It`s not unheard of for Sony to do this. I bought the brand new STRDB790 amp and within three months they`d replaced it with the STRDB795, with the additional rear channel and some separation of amplificiation circuits. I was well annoyed.

Had the last laugh though - the first run of 795s all had a power supply fault which meant many units "buzzed" audibly all the way back from whence they came :)

Where does this leave the GX700?

I thought the only difference between GX300 and GX700 was the DV input?

So surely this new model will supercede both the GX300 and the GX700?

All models bar the RDRGXD500 and RDRHX1000 are discontinued, the replacement for the RDRGX700 is the RDR-HX700 with a 160gb HDD, and is not due till August. Sony being sony will bring it forward. This ALWAYS happens this time of year, models sell out quicker then expected (like the RDRHX900) or theres not much demand, and the new models are brought forward.

Basically all new models are X10 for this year, with (unconfirmed) a 400gb onboard freeview version of the HX1000 due in October. The new models product launch is a couple of weeks away or so for trade dealers so will let ya know whats hot. Already seen a GX210, just basically a restyled GX300....

Also got the new Pioneers and JVC due end of march;)
