what speakers then?

mattski (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 30th May 2001, 11:04

so, i have a dvd player (lg3350e) and thanks to clayts i have an amplifier (kenwood 5050) but now i need speakers.

clayts suggested getting some eltax but the deal for me is space. i dont want 3 feet floor speakers because i dont have that much room. so what i am looking for is small speakers that are reasonably priced. i am no mad audiophile so im not looking for blistering quality, size and cost are my gods!

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think Richer are doing Mission 700s (stand-mounted speakers) for £60 a pair, but then you`re looking at two sets, plus a centre (Mission 70c1 £60) which can sit on your telly - that`s £180 for five decent speakers - you can always add a subwoofer later, but if you`re that stuck for space you can live without one - they do tend to take up rather a lot of room.

But I`d miss my sub now if someone took it away - those woooomphs just wouldn`t sound the same !

I actually run little JPW Mini Monitors and, for a small speaker, they are pretty darned good, and don`t take up that much room. Even without a sub they sound fine (but I so much want those Mission 702e for £100 for front floorstanding speakers that Richer are doing !)

If space is a big driver, U could look at the Mission FS2-AV speaker package...2 fronts, 2 rear, 1 centre, 1 sub. These are flat speakers, can be fixed flat to the walls and have consistently good reviews from the mags, they are mid range cost though, dont know what yr budget is.
At the end of the day, its down to your own ears, its like wine, everyone has different tastes.

I recently puchased the quadral surround acitve 1240 package from www.hifibitz.co.uk for £299. Got 5 stars in what hifi and they sound fantastic. Can also get wall brackets.

A slightly cheeper flat-pannel speaker set is the SCAVF range from denon. I`ve got `em as part of the AVF-100 package - I think you can purchase the speakers by them selves for about £400. Might be a little expensive, but I`ve got a small lounge and mounted on the walls you hardly see them, but the sound quality is pretty high. They come with a sub to handle the low end, but you can always stick that behind the sofa!

What are the mission 702e`s like? I`ve seen loads of good reviews but Richersounds keep pointing me in the direction of Eltax and Tannoy saying that the missions are weak. I`ve seen loads of good reviews in what hi-fi etc. The only one that`s put me off is where if said a bright system may sound too bright with the missions. I want them for music as well as cinema. I never have time for the demo rooms...anyone got some?
