Dolby Digital!!! what amps etc have you got and how do you find them!

timbleuk (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 17th May 2001, 12:47

Ive just got a Kenwood KRFV 7030D only £200 and it absoulutley rocks, persronaly I think buying an amp and speakers is not much more expensive than buying these Sony all in things and are much more powerful. I dont want to knock sony`s kit but people should be aware of great amps like KRF7030d and how cheap they are now.

Anyone with similar views or does anyone totaly disagree??

I managed to pick up an Onkyo 777 for £400

Dolby 5.1
DTS
135W p/c
etc etc.....way too many functions to add

And it is the dogs doodahs.

I could have shelled out an extra £500 for its successor (which would have given 6.1)....but i think £400 is enuff.

Yamaha DSP E-800 which cost £300 when they first came out (now about £250) got £30 of cable for me centre bunged in so musn`t grumble.

The yammy`s connected to a £500 Audiolab 8000LX so I get the best of both worlds.
I found all the cinema amps I demo`d (up to £600ish) to be really poor at music.

Fecker`s got the right idea (and a subscription to what hi-fi i reckon). I`ve got a Sherwood RD6106 which was £200.00 and has Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1. I can`t recommend it highly enough for home theater but I hoped it would replace my hi-fi set up as well. I now have a rack full of kit in the lounge with my old hi-fi amp and CD player included. I wish i`d went down the processor route.

Depends what you`re looking for. I`ve got a lot of Sony kit going back 20 years (including many Beta machines) it delivers and keeps delivering. At present my home cinema stuff contains a STD-DB930 and an Hk215 which are both brilliant. The big one came from Richer Sounds and the litle one from the local Sony Centre. Cheap kit is fine, but if you`re in for the long haul go quality every time.

The Sony HTK-315 is a good buy. It`s not so much an all in one thing but an off the shelf Sony amp and speakers that they`ve flung into one box! I`ve got one and it`s good value for money a bit more powerful and has more features than the 215 as well.

I hate to cause a stampede as I want one myself, but Richer Sounds are offering the DSP E800 (mail order only) for 235.00!
But what about EX ES THX etc. etc. are these just gimmicks that won`t make much difference unless you live in a cinema?

Norman .......

Doh ! Paid £300 for my E800, but s`pose I`ve had 9 months of pleasure from it missus.

The Yammy has a socket to add ANOTHER (aaargh!) processor for 6.1, 8.2, 27.8 or whatever (eg EX ES), but if you`re bothered about that now, I`d get something which supports that in the one box, won`t be cheap tho...

THX means nothing as the manufacturers have to pay Lucasarts loads of money to submit the item for THX testing. It`s just an arbitary standard.
Picture lots of Californian techies going "yeah wow, sounds great man , PASS"
