Hello

Was it OK but now is getting loud?

Fans will collect dust on them as they work, putting them out of whack (PC World technical term), generating more noise and after a while it can bring them to a halt. Personally I like to hear a little sound as it warns me if suddenly there is no sound, which could result in expensive parts overheating and burning out.

The bedroom is the dustiest room in the house.

If you have a friend or neighbour who has Sky+, see if you can get to hear what theirs sounds like, but do bear in mind that you hear yours when it is very quite elsewhere.

If it seems louder than theirs, take it back and see if the shop will swap it for another.

It should be possible to replace the fan with a quieter model, at the end it is not dissimiliar to a PC. This option only do once outside of any warranty as it would invalidate it if any problems.

If you feel that it is no different to your friends etc, then accept it and just keep on top of the dust build-up, if you can`t do it yourself take it to a TV/Pc repair place where they will be able to open it for a good clean.Should only need this once a year.

Are you sure it`s a fan ?
I`ve noticed my SKY+ is quite a noisy wee thing.
You constantly hear a `chirpy` whirring noise, which is obviously the hard drive doing its stuff.
I`ve to notch the TV up higher than I used to when I had `normal` SKY.

it comes on every hour or so for twenty minutes so prettey sure its the fan. The box at my parents i think is as loud but its in the main room and during the day so harder to tell. I know im obviously viewing in a much quieter inviroment (at least when the girlfriend is not over!) but i would still like it to not be so loud.

might try a different fan and they may be a dust issue to as it goes (not that im a dirty bugger or anything!).

Its out of warranty. Have heard of people replacing hard drives, is that as easy as a PC?

My TV,SKY+ and DVD recorder are right in front of a radiator.
Hardly ideal I know, but nowehere else to put them.
I`ll have to listen out for that fan.
If any situation is likely to set it off, mine will !

Hello

If it`s always been noisy and it`s out of warranty then try cleaning round the fan grill, do this when the unit is powered down.

If the hard drive on my puter whirrs enough to sound like a fan, I`d be frantically making sure I did back-up my data and system :D

There are quiet fans on the market, certainly for the Computer industry but I would be loathe to advise you to open your case and replace your fan unless you were absolutely happy about doing so. Your local pc shop should be able to help.

Have you looked at any dedicated Sky forums/sites?

The cleanest bedroom will always have more dust floating about, nothing to do with you being a "dirty bugger or anything.

Failing all of this you could build yourself a soundproof/reducing enclosure - cardboard box and styrofoam (or something like that)

I sat and watched 2 DVD`s in a row last night, plonked on a beanbag no more than 3 feet away from my SKY+ box which,as I said before,is around 8 inches away from the end of a radiator.
It was on whilst I watched the DVD`s.
I was listening out for a fan after reading this thread, but no fan came on at all.
So if 4 hours in front of a blazing radiator isn`t enough to get the SKY+ fan going, what is ?! :/ :D
