Hi Can someone give some advice, we want to buy a dvd recorder to record off the tv and put older home recorded vhs tapes onto dvd. We are looking at the Tevion which is coming into aldi on thursday or the liteon in argos. Both the same price but which is the better bet. Would want to make it region free at some point which I see is available for the liteon but can`t find anything on the tevion. I would appreciate some advce from anyone, many thanks, and also where is the cheapest place to get dvd rw discs.

Just be careful. One of the Liteon drives does NOT have a nicam tuner :(

The new Tevion recorder is made by Sampo : see here, although I note this version does not have a FireWire input :(

I am just trying to decide which player to get as i only have £150 to spend.

Looked at this Aldi one but from what i can tell it has no scart sockets ??

Liteone 5005 at Argos seems a bargain but is it my best bet ?

Basically i really am unsure which to buy, i want to record from sky via cart and ideally it will be RGB.
It also must have a tuner built in.

Whats my best buy ?

I would never buy anything big from Lydl as they are swines if you have to take it back. (we shop for groceries at Lydl though). Aldi on the other hand generally are most helpfull if you have a problem with dearer products.

To answer your question I cannot, but I`m sure you`ve seen it here before but I would not entertain either make & go straight for the only good DVD recorder under £199.00, & that is the Panasonic E55. I only wish I could have people try my Mico (which is basicaly the same system as your asking for, & Mico are one of the better Chinese brands) & my E55. I know EVERYONE who tried both at a home enviroment would all choose the E55.

Try and find a 4KUS DVR-230 at ASDA £139

- a LiteON LVW5002 clone with 2 scarts with RGB

LiteOn LVW 5005/5001 at £119 at Argos/Currys do not have NICAM tuner and RGB scarts

The Mico Paull so happily slags off further up the thread is an excellent choice, especially when many Sainsbury`s have refurbs in for well under £100. That was my first recorder which continues to give excellent service today-writes to absolutely any brand (or non-brand) of media I`ve thrown at it, and it`s very simple to use.

The LiteOn recorders are a good buy because they have a very active community on the net, where you can find all kinds of firmware upgrades for various things-all help improve the useability of what is already a pretty flexible machine. Some people ar reporting that these low priced Argos 5005`s are European models which have S-Video input, if so then even better.

As to whether it`s worth spending the extra money on a Panasonic, well, read through some of the long threads we`ve had on here on this very subject. Basically, you need to decide whether the incompatibility of RAM discs (Panasonics only option for using a re-writable medium) will affect what you want to do with your recordings. If all you want to do is to record, watch and wipe, then RAM is not a problem at all, in fact it would offer you better functionality than either -RW or +RW. If you want to share your recording with family or friends, or if you would want to play the discs on other player in the house, or transfer them onto a PC for editing, then the RAM format is not the way to go as it has almost zero compatibility with other players and very limited compatibility with PC DVD drives.

Uh Uh. I didn`t & won`t `slag off` the Mico. If I were to buy one of the cheap Chinese etc recorders it would ONLY be the Mico. It is a great DVD Recorder but it sits alongside a DVD recorder with so many more facilities (Panasonic E55) that the Mico only gets used if the E55 is already recording or playing back. The Mico is years ahead of a VCR but the E55 is years ahead of the Mico.

at the risk of continuing whats gotta be The most tedious argument ever,,,, ;) ,,, i have to agree, i have a few friends that have +r/rw recorders (tevion & lite-on) and they both prefer my pannasonic. But (theres always a but) they went the +r/rw route for re-writable (playing) compatability with there existing Players. tho one of them is considering dumping all his players & going over to Ram compatable stuff.
