Is this a good price for a TV?

Nina (Elite) posted this on Friday, 26th November 2004, 00:21

Sony 32" 100hz TV - £349.99 model no: KV32FX66

Toshiba 36" 100HZ tv - £599.99 model no: 36ZD26

and finally a home cinema kit - Sony SAV-SB100 for £69.99

The prices look good to me, I just wasn`t sure if that is a bargain or not or if there are other similar spec TV`s on the market but at a better price?

It`s from a local Hi-Fi shop near where I live. All brand new and boxed, I think they are closing down and need to get rid of stock.

Sony tv £979.99 @ amazon.co.uk
Tosh Tv over £900 on price compare
Cinema Kit £149.99 @ amazon again .

If they are selling these near you at that price . I would have a good look around the web to see what other prices you can find and if no where near what they are selling them for get yourself down there in the morning and bang on the door .

i think those particular tv models are a good 2-3 years old. the sony may have been quite low down their range - the toshiba is supposed to be quite good and might be a pretty good price for a 36in tv. as always with CRTs, picture quality is in the eye of the beholder.

:o I didn`t realise that`s how much they were worth!

I`m kicking myself now that I didn`t buy the TV and home cinema kit there and then. >:(

**prays that they are still there in the morning** :D Now that`s something to skive off work for ;)

They also had Sony DVD players for £30, Sony NET MDs for £30 and a Sharp LCD TV 15"for £249, those are the ones I remember off the top pf my head. They gave me a list but I can`t remember where I left it. :/

Sony aren`t what they once were, but the Tosh is superb. I have the 32" model and it delivers stunning images from a decent source. It might require a bit of tweaking in the service menu to sort out geometry and black levels though (but only if you`re as picky as me).

I have it hooked up to a prog scan Pioneer DVD player and NTSC discs look superb in progressive mode (better than interlaced PAL). It also has a built-in progressive mode that does internal deinterlacing. It`s not as good as the proper progressive mode, but it is useful for removing visible scan lines on zoomed non-anamarphic PAL DVDs.

It has lots of useful widescreen modes, and I think the 36" model has a few extra settings (such as geomagnetic correction that allows you to tilt the image horizontally if need be). Only down side is that it emits a low buzzing sound, but that seems to be something common to 100Hz sets.

I have a 32" Sony Wega that I`ve had for 5 yrs (retailed at £1,500 at the time) - think they`re now around the £800 mark. As a result of seeing the picture/TY quality - 6 other people have gone out and bought one (2 of them getting the 36" model). I personally have not seen an image to beat it - and I also have a 17" LCD TV! Given the choice now and money not being an issue - I would get an LCD on convenience/style grounds because the picture comes v.close. (Forget plasma IMHO!)

Try to look at other people`s set-ups; it`s generally useless looking in shops at the images on screen because their TV signals are split - resulting in v poor images or they hook it up to a DVD player and show digitally-created movies like Monsters Inc that always look good.

The Home Entertainment equipment mags and associated websites are always a good source too.
