Cheap And Cheerful "Plays Anything" DVD Player

goalscrounger (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 12th November 2004, 17:39

Any recommendations for a DVD Player at the £40 mark that will play anything thrown at it (with the exception of Divx of course, unless they can be bought for this price now?!!).

I would like to get a few people a DVD player for Christmas.

Thanks!!

Pacific 1002 from Asda. Think it costs about £45. I haven`t got one but I will be soon. Heard they play everything, even mp3`s off a DVD.

Aria Technology have a Divx DVD (firmware upgradeable) for £41 today, on their Deals of the Day page. Looks good, and can be made multi region too using these tips from Multiman on their faqs section.

Multiregion instructions:

a. No disc status;
b. Enter to setup menu;
c. Press numeric button 0~6 (input you want region code); / [pls use your remote control handset to operate all these following up steps]
d. Press mute button;
e. press left cursor button;
f. press right cursor button;
g. Press ok button

P.s: Under NO DISC condition, you press 8 times of the 0 button then it wl appears the region code number before you set up to change.

The Pacific 1002 (mentioned above) really is superb and now that they`ve made it look good as well,it`s a no-brainer for £34.
It used to look truly awful,but now looks really really good.
I bought two at the weekend as christmas presents.

Hi

Apologies if this is a really daft question, but if a DVD player is capable of playing DivX files, does the DivX file have to be copied onto a DVD R/RW disc, or will the player read it from a CD in the same way as, for example, an mpeg file?

Many thanks

Bowfer, would you know if the new Pacific 1002 uses the same hack as the 1002W? I was just about to recommend to someone they got one, when I found out they`d changed the player.
