Freeview On Indoor Ariel?

magnius (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 12th November 2004, 14:05

I want ot get Freeview for my TV in Bedroom...buy I have no outdoor ariel connection nearby :( Is there any way of getting a good signal with an indoor ariel? Or are any of those remote signal senders any good? I don`t really want to have to run a lead to the freeview box.

Depends how good your reception is generally-if you are close to a transmitter you may get something with an inside aerial, but I`d try it with a friends box first if I could

We inherited a Pace digibox from someone, for the bedroom.
Man,we must have tried every indoor aerial Argos and B+Q sell.
The best was,unbelievably,the cheapest.
A Maxview something or other for around £7
It still didn`t work worth a damn with the digibox I`m afraid.
I would say we are about 5 miles,as the crow flies, from a transmitter.
Normal TV pictures are fine.
We gave up on the digibox. :(

Had we not been moving house my next attempt was going to be patching into the outdoor aerial in the loft and running an extension down the cavity wall into the bedroom.

Then again, getting SKY sounded simpler..... :/

What about signal senders?

not even a consideration. I`m afraid, as the box has got to have a co-ax connection, and AFAIK, senders will only send a signal from amd to a scart/composite type outlet.

To be honest you`d be better getting an aerial put on the wall outside your bedroom window, then it`s just a short run of cable through the wall to the freeview box.

Okies....I`ll see about running an extention through from the front room then...a lot of cable, but I`m sure I can tidy it away. I can`t really put up an outdoor ariel just for this...I`m two floors up in a council flat...they won`t let me put up an ariel...although they did let me put up a satalite!!

you must have bought a narrowband "non digital" one then.
As a general rule, if you`re close enough to the transmitter (as EH says), and you can get a semi decent picture (doesn`t necessarily need to be good, just enough to show a decent signal reaching the aerial), then a tenner or twenty quid One4All "Digital" should do it.

The £20 one has an inbuilt booster, the £10 doesn`t.

Do Boosters really work? The bloke in my local TV Repair shop said they are a con.

In my experience, yes. Only problem I think is that in some cases, they amplify the noise as well as the clean signal. They work better with an external aerial, but there again you`ve got a better signal to start with.
