Hardware Forum
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if this machine will play 4x speed discs as standard, as packaging on the EMTF discs say that if it is only 2X may not play, I got a blank dvd-r 8x and it recorded and played fine....... what is the current presetting for this machine if purchased recently?
I looked at the firmware update provided by liton and was totally baffled! I might just take a chance and buy them, pc world has 50 for 19.99 good buy? Cheers

can`t help with you`re first question, but as for the pc world price, i can honestly say it`s very expensive :o i get 100 (spindle) for £16-£17, and thats printable :D but tbh, if you don`t live near a computer fair, & don`t wanna go mail order, then the price is pretty average. so if it`s more convieniant, get em ;) & at 40p each, it`s still cheaper than a (decent) blank vhs tape.

I don`t think you`ve got a problem-once the disc is recorded, any player should play it, regardless of what it`s recording speed is...
Anyway, if you are using any speed discs on your Lite On, then they will work because it only records at x1 speed-the speed only becomes applicable if you are using a computer based burner.
On the price of discs...Maplins were doing a buy 50 get 50 free last month-Don`t know whether that`s still running, but I think it was something like £28 for a hundred.
I fell across a shop in Liverpool a few weeks back that does blanks as cheap as I can get from a computer fair..Ritek dye G04 discs for £25 a hundred and some Datasafe ones branded `One` for £18 a hundred-both x04 speed and I`ve not had a single coaster out of either.
Scary isn`t it? 438 GIGABYTES of storage for 18 quid....
Thankyou Emily, Could you just emphasise a bit more regarding the recording speed.....as i dont understand why you need to download `firmware` to cope with higher number discs(ie 4x 8x etc) if it will only record 1x1? Cheers Dave
DVD discs are manufactured with a maximum burn speed. Most common discs currently are either x4 or x8, but you will find discs x1 and x2
PC burners can write discs at multiple speeds-new drives have x16 speed capability, which theoretically will write a full DVD in under 8 minutes (Last time I checked, x16 speed discs weren`t widely available). These drives are `backwards compatible` with x8-x4-x2-x1 speed discs, so if you have a x16 burner, any disc will do, but if the discs are labelled x4 speed, then you will only burn at x4 speed, regardless of the burners maximum speed
If you have , say, a x4 speed burner, then you can still use any speed disc, but the maximum it will write at is x4 speed.
It`s the same for your standalone. Most DVD recorders only record in x1 speed (i.e. real time) so any disc, regardless of the advertised speed, will be ok to use.
The firmware update could be because the original firmware was written with only lower speed discs in mind, and there could be some incompatibilites with the newer , high speed discs (Even though you are only writing at x1 speed)

Basically right, being more technical I think it`s to do with the "writing strategies" on the actual discs, so in this case the disc will be expecting to write at up to 4x, but the player is recording 1x.
Pioneer early drives suffered from high speed disc incompatibility, and it even led to some drives being screwed because the firmware hadn`t been updated (just don`t ask me what it did! Lol)

Yep, I`ve got the Pioneer A105 which was an absolute pig out of the box...then I discovered the `unofficial` firmware upgrade which turned it into a smooth running, no coaster making dream machine that wrote effortlessly at x4 speed.
Still not as good as my NEC2500 though, now that is a great drive!!
