Please can someone tell me how to connect my Panasonic DVD Recorder?

littlewren (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 25th October 2004, 20:44

Hi again,

I have another query I hope someone can help me with, please.

I have a Panasonic E55 DVD Recorder, but haven`t yet connected it to my TV, video recorder and NTL box as I`m not sure where to start. The manual doesn`t help either as there are wires going everywhere and I can`t fathom them out. :(

Could someone please tell me where to connect the leads from the Panasonic DVD Recorder? So I have a Sanyo widescreen TV, Panasonic Video Recorder, NTL box and also of course, the DVD Recorder. There is also a Scart lead going somewhere! If I can`t suss it out with help from you kind people, I will have to call someone out to do it and I can`t really afford to.

Many thanks in advance.

Carrie :)

Depends on how many scarts the TV has, but...
(assuming your NTL box has only scart out, RF loop through and you have to select each channel on the NTL unit to view)
2 TV scarts:
AV1 TV scart to AV1 E55 scart.
AV2 TV scart to NTL box TV scart
NTL box VCR scart to AV2 E55 scart (may require changing the setting from video to RGB etc on the Panasonic menu, basically, turn the TV to AV1, put the E55 on AV2 then change the setting until your NTL box can be seen and thats it set)
Aerial from roof/loft etc into the NTL box, Aerial out of NTL box to E55 aerial in, Aerial out of E55 to TV.

If you have only one Scart on the NTL box, omit the TV to NTL box connection.
If you have no aerial connection on the NTL box, omit that above and put the aerial into the E55 first.
If you have no aerial whatsoever and just run off the NTL, forget I mentioned aerial!
If you have everything above, but only one scart on the TV, then run the scarts as E55 AV1 to VCR Scart on NTL, NTL TV scart to the TV (it has a built in auto switch for when you watch a DVD)

Lemme know if ya need more than that :D

I can give or take the VCR but the above setup is similar to what I have, I was told though that the NTL box 2 scarts, the TV one has RGB but the VCR/EXT only Composite, anyone know if that is true as that is what I had assumed after reading digitalspy(though it`s strange why you can choose what setting you want i.e. RGB/Composite yet it would only affect one scart on the NTL box)

I think the Panasonic E55 user manual is very good, shows and explains just about everything. :/

The E55 manual is an absolute piece of p*** compared with the dreadful E50 one...
One obvious example of where they`ve applied some thought to improvements.

Thanks very much for the information, and whoops, I`ve just read the other post you made Jimbo, about the need to say what connections we have before asking how to connect. That makes perfect sense. :/

I am going to try and connect it tomorrow using your advice and if (when) I get stuck, I`ll come back here and beg for more help! :)

Thanks again, this is a great board!

This thread has made me think. I currently have an analogue NTL box which has no scart lead - it`s currently routed to my VCR. Will this cause me a problem if I get a DVD Recorder? Will I have to choose between the DVDR or VCR? If so, I guess I could hook it up to the DVDR and just keep the VCR as a stand-alone for watching old tapes.
