Page 1 of What are the drawbacks of owning a Panasonic DMRE55EBS DVD Recorder plse?

Hi, I have the Panasonic DMRE55EBS DVD Recorder on approval for 14 days from a catalogue. I am a bit concerned about the fact that it will only play -R or RAM discs and don`t know enough to decide whether this would be a problem for future playing of discs.

I note from the instruction manual that it won`t play +R pr +RW discs so I`m wondering if this could be a problem if, say, my brother was to record a DVD on his Recorder and pass it to me. If his won`t record -R or RAM discs, then I wouldn`t be able to play it.

Sorry, I`m going round the houses, but I really would appreciate any feedback that anyone has on this DVD Recorder before I go ahead and decide to keep it.

All the plus and minus points would be very welcome. :)

It might not be 100% +r/+rw playback compatible therefore Panny aint gonna say it will play them, but I just whacked a +RW from my Pioneer 108 into my E50 last night to test it and not a hitch....

my E30 also plays them flawlessly, i`m told the E50 struggles, tho i can`t confirm that :)

soz jimbo ;) i only said cos i remember someone saying it in one of the early "All out war" dvd recorder threads a while ago, :)

I found the Panasonic recorder I had played +R without problem,but not +RW.
The only reason you may want to send the machine back is if you have any plans to record something,lend or play on another player then reuse it.You can`t do that with RAM.If the recordings are to be kept and lent,-R is fine.Only Panasonic rely completely on RAM.If you think it may be a problem try a Pioneer which uses -RW,and there are a few which will record to -RW and RAM aswell.

You have the best value for money recorder there is out there. Lend your RAM discs to anyone with a DVD-RAM recorder (most people) or Panasonic player. Or put them on a DVD-R (less than 20p) & give friends recordings rather than risk getting back a R/W disk that`s scratched or even fails to work.

The only drawbacks I`ve found with either my E50 or my E55 is that the missus bleedin well refuses to learn how they work and keeps on yackety-yacking about how she misses her portable with built in video etc.etc.etc.blablablablabla

just browsing the latest What Hi-Fi mag in the newsagent and it seems the E55 is their recorder of the year. (though it has gained -RW recording capability and in highest quality mode can do 2hrs on a 4.7GB disc, maybe phellings will want one with the added -RW function now...)
