Sony or Panasonic DVD recorder, which is more reliable.

Zovirax (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 3rd October 2004, 16:45

Decided it`s either the Sony GX3/GX300S or the Panasonic E55, like to hear the views of owners of well used machines ,which is the more reliable, I want reliability and how long should I expect them to last with moderate use.

Just tell which is the most reliable...please.

i can`t :) sorry, i`ve never had either of these machines, but my "old" panny DMR-E30 has done around 2000 discs without missing a beat (apart from the odd duff disc) but at the same time, Sony do have a reputation for turning out good, reliable kit.

sorry, i didn`t help at all there did i :( but look on the bright side, i don`t think you`ll go far wrong with either machine :D

To put in my five pen`th. In the VHS/Beta recorder days, I had both & had no problems with either (apart from a conection on the RF in on the SONY). I used them both a lot. From that point of view they are equal, however when it came to smaller units like CD players & so on the Panasonic equipment I used remained reliable but I had a few problems with the SONY. (still a little pi**ed of with top of the range £200.00 + Sony CD walkman suddenly packing up after little use but about a year out of guarantee & my car radio/MD player volume control packing up again about 6 months out of guarantee. So my conclusion is the Panasonic has the edge. My two Panasonic DVD recorders have no problems at all. If the SONY is the system you want, Go for it, but I prefer the Panasonic....believe it or not..... :)

I would go with Paull on this one but for different reasons.I think both these makes have proven reliability records and neither has an advantage on those grounds. However,Sony kit is usually overpriced,so unless you are getting a good deal on the Sony with it comparable in price to Panny, don`t pay extra for Sony.
On a different note, choosing between these 2 is odd,as both offer very different types of dvd recorders. The Sony is dual format, but isn`t really, while Panny offfers the RAM format which will be incompatible with other players.I apologise if you are aware of the differences for mentioning it,but its best to be sure,as choosing from these 2 seems to show you either do not know about the differences,or don`t care. Please let us know which

What about Pioneer reliability?

What about the cheap ones, under £180?

:D

My Sony Betamax recorders from the 1980s are still going strong and haven`t missed a beat in 20 years if that`s any help. But then again so are my Panasonic VHS recorders!

I only know the Panasonic e50/55 range of dvd recorders and they have been brilliant over the past 18 mths. Use a reasonable disc and they deliver the goods every time.

I`ve had the E55 for about 5 months and I`ve been riding it pretty hard. Its playback/recording reliability is 100% so far.

I have had Pioneer dvd players since 1998,replacing one with a Panny along the way.I currently have a Pioneer player and a Pioneer recorder.Reliability has never been a problem. If you scan across many different forums, the only make with any continuing problems around reliability is Philips.Choose any other make and you can stop worrying about reliability and concentrate on which features you want

Well seems the Panasonic is the choice, can get it for £199 + free delivery, cant find a single customer review where one as gone wrong or developed a fault, Like the idea of the Ram disc seems like a removable hard drive to me, wanted to buy a LG DVD-RW drive for my computer anyway and they take Ram disc .

Anyway thanks for all your advice lads. :) :)

You won`t regret it. I was so pleased with my E50 that I went in for the E55 & am very pleased with it.
