JVC TH-A35 compatability probs

tisal (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 23rd September 2004, 08:58

I have recently bought an Xbox and when I use the optical o/p(with the correct settings on the Xbox dash) to feed into my JVC TH-A35 home cinema I get no dolby digital sound from my JVC when I play a game but it shows 6 spkrs on my amp. I do get suround sound (2 spkrs) when I de-select dolby digital on my xbox.

I piped another DVD player using the optical through my JVC and it worked fine..6 spkrs and digital audio. Is there a problem with compatability ( bit decoding) between the xbox and JVC???

Has anyone got the same problem? Any answers?

hi tisal,

i am having exactly the same problem. i`ve had the jvc th-a35 since xmas and only just this weekend got around to getting an optical / digital in connection for my xbox after much recommendation from friends.

i bought a cheap scart & optical wire combo. this worked perfectly with movies but with games I got no sound at all... even though the display reads DOLBY DIGITAL and all 6 speakers are lit up. as you have said i can get surround sound if i de-select dolby on the dash setting.

a friend advised to get a better cable so i went out and bought the official xbox advanced scart pack AND a jvc optical wire (just to cover all angles!!). to my annoyance i still can`t get this to work. i just can`t understand why movies will play in all their audible glory but not the games.

if you, or anyone has a solution it would be most appreciated!! i`ve spent too much now for this not to work!!

cheers.

It is so annoying. I know exactly how you feel. Have you rang JVC? You should just so that they can build up a data base of known probs and maybee they can sort it.
Unfortunately I may have some bad news for you.. I got my JVC from richer sounds and I rang them last night to see if they knew anything about it. The manager said he had heard of it b4 and claims the Xbox is not compatible with this model. I`ve had my JVC since November and only recently got my Xbox. If I had my box from the start or if I had bought my JVC 14 Days ago they would of exchanged it. But as I have had it for some time (less than 12 mnths) they wont do anything as there is no fault to fix, just one of those things. My other argument was that if I had known it wasn`t compatible I would of probably opted for a different system.
I am going to phone JVC again tonight with this argument and probably Citizens advice.

If you find out anything more or you manage to sort something out, Will you let me know plz.

Thanx

p.s
There is quite a few posts in the http://forums.xbox.com . Look in the audio visual forum for surround sound probs,JVC, dolby digital etc or under my name tisal

thanks for the info tisal, i will keep you posted.
i sent an e-mail to jvc last night explaining the problem so hopefully they will offer some advice but i think it may just be one of those things too...
shame really cos i really like the jvc system. i`ve had my xbox for a long time but have only just gotten around to getting it `hooked-up`... or not as the case seems to be!

cheers again.

Have you heard anything from JVC?

I had a reply from JVC and this is what they said in reply to our problem/symptoms.

"We can confirm that unless the source signal is fibre optic Dolby Digital
5.1 the JVC TH-A35R Home Cinema System will not convert the sound the Dolby
5.1

There is no software upgrade to enable the JVC TH-A35R to produce dolby
Digital 5.1 surround sound from a mono or stereo input signal."

This is the level of technical expertise on their help desk...I dont need to be told the obvious..
They obviously couldn`t be bothered to read the e-mail properly.

I`ve had a reply from JVC too... at least this one sounds a little more technical, but no solution provided!!

Unfortunately we are unable to provide an accurate diagnosis as to the difficulty that you are experiencing with the connection of your X-Box to the JVC TH-A35R Home Cinema System.

We recommend that you contact the disributor of the X-Box to determine whether the optical output of this unit should be activated through any customer operating procedure.

In the instance that the problem persists please contact the dealer from
whom the product was purchased in order that the optical input/output can
be examined to see whether a fault exists.

DAMN IT !!

LOL... sounds like nobody has any answers. When my JVC packs up in the very near future I will have to find another one( which will work with xbox).Cant have Halo 2 and no dolby digital.

Out of interest where did you buy your JVC from?

I was wondering if anybody ever got to the bottom of this problem? I bought an xbox recently and am having exactly the same problems as you describe, with the same JVC unit.

I would be very interested to know if a solution was ever found (other than throwing the JVC away and buying something else, obviously).

Thanks,

John
