Page 1 of Watching Spanish TV

As I have been learning Spanish for a while, I would be interested in watching some Spanish TV. I know that the only way to do it is to get a dish and a decoder and have the dish directed towards the right satellite. Has anybody got that setup running? If yes how many channels do you get in Spanish and much does it cost you monthly. Thanks

I don`t know about TV but I notice on the DVD Frida that it`s possible to set different audio language and subtitle languages. If this is common other DVDs it might be possible to use DVDs to help learn languages e.g. listen in Spanish but read English subtitles or listen in English with Spanish subtitle to practice respectively listening and reading skills.

I already do that and you are right they are of a great help (mainly with my DVD player as I can forward and rewind just like a VCR). But I am more interested in listening to live TV - news, weather, gameshow etc. Thanks anyway

Firstly the channels you would probably be interested are

Canal Canaries
CCV Canal Comunitat Valenciana
TVEi
TM Sat/La Otra
Euronews

As to a suitable set you could probably get a system to receive Asta 19.2E for around £90, Dish/Bracket/Receiver/LNB/cables and connectors.
I myself fitted the Comag SL55 from Lidl a couple of weeks back and it is a remarkable little unit so if possible take a look at Lidl just on the off chance they have some left. Other than that I can only suggest a search using Google and type in Digital satellite receiver and you should get a few retailers that could help you.

Once you have fitted the dish, and receiver do you have to pay some kind of subscribtion or buy a card to put into the decoder?

Sorry jean I should have mentioned. After installing the system the channels are FTA, free to air, and as such no fee is charged.

Looks pretty good, saw one complete system that cost £135 and allows you to line up your dish on both Telestar Astra and Eutelsat. Not bad really. Now I need to find out if I can fit that myself or would I be better calling a specialist in. Thanks for the link Choagy.

If you are going to take the plunge and get a system I would recommend you get someone to fit it for you. Not because it is an extremely difficult job to physically fit the system but because you only have to be a fraction of a degree out in either horizontal or vertical plane to lose a signal.
No idea how much fitting would cost but I think if you ask around you might find a Sky fitter in your area to fit yours "On the madam" for a small fee.
Try the site I pointed you to, they may be able to organise fitting as an extra if you buy the system from them.

you are probably right, now all i have got to do is convince the misus that I REALLY need one of them to better my Spanish... and this is not an easy task
