Page 1 of Which Freeview Box???

Cancelled Sky & looking at Freeview....
What shall I look for and why?
They seem to vary in price but is one any better than the next?
Surely the picture quality is identical.

I don`t think picture quality is the same for each model same as for TV`s videos, DVD players etc.

I have 2 in the house a Pace DTR210T which has 2 scarts and digital optical out ( main reason I bought it ) and phono connectors and Sagem ITD60 which was under £50 from Safeway, its a basic machine with only 1 scart but ok for a bedroom.

I`d say the Pace was definitely better, its small has all the right connections and works very fast. Picture quality is very good as well.

Only set I can recommend is the one my good lady bought me the other day.

The Goodmans GDB5 is both a Freeview STB and a DAB radio as well so it kills two birds with the one proverbial stone.
In my area, Falkirk, the reception is excellent using an indoor aerial so if you use it with an exterior aerial the signal should be at least as good.
The picture and sound quality on both Freeview and DAB is, to my untrained eyes and ears, as good as it gets.

Give this one a go and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Plus if you have audio leads you can record BBC7 shows to your PC and listen at your leisure.

I bought the GDB 3 on Tuesday. After I set it up I had to take the dog down the garden. I looked up and saw my Aeriel had been blown down onto the roof, but I tried it out anyway. I got a great picture from it. Very pleased.

It has two scarts and audio also something called an RS 232 socket, but I don`t know what thats for.

Not sure but I think the RS232 socket may have been designed to allow some external devices to be connected to it. Possibly an external card reader, for sayTop Up TV, or such like for the Sky boxes.

Glad the GDB3 works well.
I am really pleased with the GDB5. The DAB radio is a great bonus for me as TBH I love old radio shows such as Round the horne and Dads Army and can record them to my PC to listen at my leisure.

The RS 232 is there to do any major firmware upgrading from a PC/laptop-most satellite receivers have these on them to allow for the same, plus also easy access to programme list editing on your PC.


You wouldn`t be able to put a card reader on it, though, it wouldn`t work fast enough

I found a slip of paper in the box and it says "Serial (RS232) Socket The serial socket is only used for factory setup. DO NOT attempt to connect anything to this socket unless authorised by Goodmans."

I guess I won`t be touching it then.

The goodmans box was featured in Which recently, they thought it was the best sub £150 box, easiest to use and best picture quality I think it won.
