Does the umbilical cable (or the sub) in the Denon AV-F100 do any thing special?

Giz (Competent) posted this on Friday, 6th April 2001, 16:38

I`m looking to replace the speaker cable supplied with my Denon system, but it`s got an umbilical cable running to the sub and the speaker then plug into the sub. Will I do any harm connecting the speakers straight to the amp? It mentions in the book something about the sub taking the the lower frequencies (it`s got NXT flat pannel speaker and I`m not sure how low they go) - I`m not sure if just means that the amp routes the lower frequencies to the sub (which would be fine) or if the sub actually extracts it from the speaker cables before sending the signal on to the speakers.

i think you can connect the speakers straight to the amp as it has terminals for them.

i have just go one of these systems and i am still playing around getting it set up to my liking

i am so far very impressed with the sound quality , and thenxt speaker just disappear into my living room the sub has a fair old kick too it

what is your views on it so far

Yeah, got mine at the same place for the same price. I really like it so far. As you say, the speakers just disappear into the room. Oh, and it looks *really* nice :)

I`ll have a play around with the speakers - I can`t help thinking that it would benefit from from the decent cabling.

nathan let me know how you get on and if you try different cables what it is like.

i have just watched U571 and the sound was amazing . the scenes with the depth charges going off, the rumble felt like an earthquake in my front room. And when the submarine went to 200 meters and started to break up the corners of my room were creaking and steaming

i was impressed , to be honest for such a small unit and small speakers i am suprised how good it actually is and the front /back seperation is A1

nathan

how have you got the speakers set up
i have left in on default for all except the sub

front large
centre small
surrounds small
sub on main+

this seems to be the best for me
one thing i have noticed is that (and this may be the discs not the system) is the for example U571 volume was around 44 and that was loud, yet on toy story 2 i have to have it on about 35 before it is to loud
have you found this and is it as i suspect just the different discs
any other good little tweaks you found i would be gratefull for.

i am using my philips dvd player with it as it has rgb scart, i sold the denon player that came with it to my mate and he is more than happy with the picture quality.how have you found it

cheers

I`ve got the front speaker set to `large` also, but can`t decided if the others should be `large` also. When listerning to a CD in stereo I`ve played around with the large and small setting and too much of the signal is sent to the sub when the speakers are set to small - seems to result in an obvious `gap`. Setting them to large seems much better. BUT, being as the other speaker are exactly the same, it seems reasonable to set them to large also - trouble is, I find it quite hard to tell the difference when listerning to a film. I should probably try listerning to them whilest playing a CD in 5 channel stereo mode.

I set the sub to send base to the sub as if the front speakers where on small even though they are on large (so you get a small frequency range sent to the speakers and the sub). This seems to sound a little `fuller` in my room. Can`t remember if this is main+ or the other setting.

Yep, I`ve also seen different volumes from different disks. I`m pretty sure this is normal.

I must admit that I didn`t realise that the DVD player didn`t output an RGB signal until after I`d ordered it. But, this has actually turn out for the best. I`ve only got 2 SCARTS on my TV - one wired for RGB the other for S-Video. My sky box can only output RGB or composite, and the RGB output is far, far nicer than the composite picture. So, having the DVD player connected to the S-Video SCART and the Sky (plus video) going to the the RBG socket has worked out quite nicely.

I haven`t really needed to play with the other settings. Have you done the test tones? I couldn`t get to work until I realised that you need to be in DolbyD mode to get it to work.

yes i have done the test tone and it seems ok the sub certainley has a rumble too it.

i haven,t realy played with the other settings , i am waiting for my gladiator disc to arrive so i can check out what dts is like, it says the LFE should be set to +10db for dts so i am going to try it and play around with it on dts

i am like you can,t tell much of a difference with films so i think i will leave it on default for know

"(it`s got NXT flat pannel speaker and I`m not sure how low they go)"

Low is some thing NXT can`t do. Just try unpluging the sub.

When you hear NXT with out the sub you will probably come to the conclution that a cable upgrade is not needed.

All so all pannels should be set to large. This is true of the Mission too.

All the best,

Andrew.

So you don`t believe it`s worth upgrading the speaker cables? Playing them with out the sub is a good idea - I`ll certainly give that a try - but I`m still pretty new to `proper` hi-fi and I don`t believe I could tell just by listening if it`s worth upgrading the cables or not - but I don`t really want to have to buy the cables just to make the comparasion. Anyone know actually how good the supplied cable is? Most review`s that I`ve read recommend through out any supplied cables......
