Optical or Coaxial connection?

toffeeslot (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 2nd September 2004, 08:55

I`ve just bought a new DVD player (Roksan Kandy) and it has both optical and coaxial outputs. Never having the luxury of digital output before (my previous DVD had only coaxial), I`m not sure which connection to my amp would be best? The amp has two optical connections, with one being used for Sky+. Is it best to use coaxial as before, or should I connect with optical - or use both? I`d apreciate an explanations of the benefits to both. With it being a Roksan, I use the player for both DVD and music.

Thanks v much

? Coaxial is a digital out/input. I personally allways recommend Coax using a good 75 ohm screened cable unless you are going over very long runs.

sorry - meant never had the luxury of a `optical digital output` before! So I`m taking it I`m sticking to the Coax then? I`m presuming it gives a better pic/sound?

Niether Coax or optical have any thing to do with the picture. They are just for your sound. I prefer coax but others prefer optical, some will tell you that there is no differance as the are just zeros and ones, but then again an aeronautical enginer will tell you a bumble bee can not fly. I tell you they can.

I suggest a search, this is the kind of thing that`s been discussed a number of times before. The answer`s nearly always the same though, and that is that it`s often down to personal preference.

I prefer coaxial myself, the connections are a bit more solid and reliable.

I also use co-ax for the dvd

Simply because my X-box and minidisk are optical only, only have one free optical left which is reserved for when I finally get sky +, which is also optical only, I think.

All the best

FWIW I usually use coax because the cables themselves seem more robust, but my Sony DB-925 receiver recently developed a fault resulting in the coax input becoming intermittent (I`ve tried a number of coax cables).

I`m now using the optical input instead with no noticeable difference in sound quality.
