I assume you`ve already checked this out ?

http://www.yamaha-audio.co.uk (under New Home Cinema products)

I`ve also got a brochure from Superfi in Nottm - looks pretty tasty - 25W front & rear, 40W centre, 50W sub, and includes speaker brackets

I`ve just bought a VS-10 from John Lewis (with a price match on unbeatable.co.uk) and am really quite impressed.

In their little demo room they had a VS-10, Videologic Digitheatre DTS, Bose something-or-other and a Sony. The Sony didn`t work. The Digitheatre worked for about 20 seconds then stopped (a reflection of their setup, rather than the Digitheatre itself, I think...). The Bose sounded marvellous, although its speakers did appear to be in the best positions. To my ears, the Yamaha sounded similar to the Digitheatre and neither sounded significantly worse than the (much more expensive) Bose, particularly considering the poor speaker positioning (both sets of rear speakers were on the floor on either side of a small sofa, whereas the Bose speakers were wall mounted).

I should point out that I have never listened to a home cinema setup other than the ones above and my old pro-logic TV, so what impressed me might actually be offensive to some...

Lastly... here`s an excerpt from a thread on Home Cinema Online (whole thread at http://www.wvip.co.uk/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001595.html )

>I`ve got a VS-10 (from unbeatable.co.uk) for £298 all-in.

>digital lead and you will be too.

>I`ve got a mate who`s spent about £1300 on HT stuff, and I can`t say that
>it`s THAT much better than the VS-10. DTS is VEEEERY loud - here`s
>a hint - if you get one, turn the "night Mode" on and not off for a better
>sound (bizarre, but true).

There`s a review of it in April`s DVD monthly. Only gets 6/10 as I recall, but mainly because it says you have to buy the subwoofer and rears separately(?). Is this correct mush, or did you get all components for your £300?
Regards,
Sword

I got the lot for £300.

The VS-10 system is actually just the decoder/amp plus the left and right speakers, but most companies are bundling it with the `optional` NX-SW10, which includes the subwoofer, centre and rears. I don`t think I`ve seen the two items sold separately...

thanks for the info guys,
am sorely tempted to visit john lewis to pick one up.
what do you think of this option?, the more i have thought of buying a system, i got the idea of buying a yamaha dsp a5, i think this is available for about £250. i already have a decent pair of hifi speakers that can be used as front left and centre, also i have a pair of jamo`s that are suitable for use as rear surrounds, this would mean me buying a front centre as well as a subwoofer with dspa5. i think that this would be the better setup but am tempted to go for the all in one compact solution of the vs10
any opinions would be appreciated
thanks

A5 + separates every time mate. 70w per channel -vs- 25/40 with the `10.

I own the A5 and it is an excellent bit of kit.

You can probably get a cheap centre/sub at http://www.richersounds.com, or try Superfi shops too

If you need convincing any further have a glance at the What Hi Fi 2001 Guide (gold cover) in WHSmith - p122ish - good write up, and their budget AV amp of the year !

does anybody recommend the yammy rxv-596rds, can,t seem to find the
dsp a5 in stock anywhere, have been led to believe that the 596 is exactly the same as the a5 but with the tuner built in.
letsbuyit.com have them for £259.
if anyone has good reports on this , i will buy
thanks
