Where Can I Buy SKY+ ?

BigDH (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 29th June 2004, 21:33

I`m looking to buy SKY+ but loathe to pay another £60 to SKY to come and install it. It sounds simple enough to do but can anyone please point me in the direction of somewhere I can buy the SKY+ box from?

it`s NOT as simple as it sounds, as you have to run TWO LNB feeds back and check the signal quality, you need to still connect it to the phone line, and you have yo install a quad LNB to the dish.

Trust me, it`ll cost you either more than, or very close to , £60 to do it yourself.
Pay Sky. That way, if it screws up, it`s their responsibility.

I have seen SKY + advertised and the quad LNB is included with the box. I already have SKY so isn`t it a case of just swapping the LNB, running another cable from the dish and swapping the box?

In it`s most basic form, yes, but in actuality, no.

You may need to fine tune the adjustment of the dish now you have up to 4 feeds running from it, and the card you have for sky is keyed to the receiver itself.
Sky have to deregister the card from one to re register it to the other.

Also, Sky won`t sell a Sky+ box without a subscription attached, so simple answer to be honest, is bite the bullet and pay the sixty quid!

I`ve ordered it now for £179 + £10 for an installation kit (cable, connectors etc.). Also free next day delivery. Better than £260 and waiting 3 to 4 weeks from SKY.

Sounds a piece of cake (famous last words)

I`ll let you know.

You might as well not have bothered. If anything, anything at all goes wrong with it,Sky will see that they did not install it and will charge you £65 for a call out. That £60 install saves a lot of hassle.I hope you are familiar with the Installation menu and the callback procedure because you will need them.

To be fair to Sky, they offered to install my Sky+ within about 3-4 days (not 4 weeks)

In the end, I had to wait a week and a half (but that was because I wanted it done on a Saturday)

I believe you also need a special viewing card, which has to be registered back at base (but I could be wrong on this).

But I agree with everyone else, pay the extra cash (and get the kit guaranteed for a year)

Sky lead times in most areas are now under 3 days (had one customer asked if she was available for install the day after she was ringing!!)

They`ll also as you say, install weekends.

You don`t need a special viewing card, but you do have to "pair" your card to the receiver, which is done by Sky themselves.

Surprised to see you managed to get your Sky+ receiver and the "install kit" delivered for a tenner less than Sky sell the unit, but good luck with it.

you do need to "callback" the unit too for the card to pair, and I really hope you can get full service from Sky without a new contract.

Keep us posted on how ya got on :)

The job is now completed, it was an absolute doddle.

If you can hold a screwdriver and fit a connector to the end of co-ax cable you won`t have a problem.

Cost involved,

SKY+ box - £179
Installation kit - £10 (both from http://www.satellitecentre.co.uk/) with free delivery.
Self amalgamating tape - £4.99 (from B & Q)

Also tidied up the cable that SKY installed originally.
