ANd thats the only one you will find. just need to establish if you really need the firwire link. if not then stick to the 70.

ive got the 75, had it for about 3 onths now and i can confidently say it is excellent, hopefully you will not regret it.

good luck

James, why have you decided to go the Philips route? There are better machines out there.Let us know what your requirements are and I should think lots of dvdr owners on here can give you better option than the 2 Philips machines

I agree with phelings.I had a Philips R70 and
it was a nightmare! I now have a Panasonic
HS2 with HDD which is a cracking machine.

Think anything before you think Philips!

James, I have had a DVDR70 for just over two months now and it works fine for me, I have recorded around 78 disc`s now, most being the cheap BULKPAQ 4x speed DVD+R @ 7.99 for 25 in a tub. (32p a disc plus p&p.

phelings had a lot of problems with older Philip`s dvd recorders and now has a pathological hatred of Philips product. Like you I have had tv`s and vcr`s from them with no problems. I can`t say long term about this model, I have`nt had it long enough, but it works for me. Below is my experience with disc`s in the DVDR70.

TDK DVD+RW 1-4x. Just the one disc I ordered with the recorder so I had something to record on.

VERBATIM 4x certified DVD+RW. I have about six of these for day to day recordings. £1.39p each.

VERBATIM 4x certified DVD+R. Had about five of these. £0.99p each. Only reason for not buying any more was I use the below for +R disc`s.

BULKPAQ 4x speed DVD+R 25 pack (tub). I`ve used around 72 of these so far with 2 going coaster on me. This happened early on and both times I had just put in a long, and I mean LONG disc name. Stopped doing that and no more coasters. £7.99p for 25. THAT`S 32p a disc, I like that. Better that £9-£14 for 3 in a supermarket!!

The Verbatim and Bulkpaq disc`s came from SVP Communication www.svp.co.uk, delivery was £4.99 for 2/3 day delivery by courier (Interlink Express).
NO connection with them other than spending my money with them!

I can say since the Philips R70 and R75 came out that there has not been many reported faults on here, the few I`ve seen on here have bein enough to class as a few faulty machines out of an entire production run of a product. Bet Panasonic get a few faulty E50 and E55 recorders from time to time aswell! :D :) :D

I`ve got a Philips DVDR880 and altho I have had problems with it, I still like its fetures however, I would not mind trying or even owning one of the new models as they look good.

I have had problems with Philips products for decades. But check out the latest What Video for a 2 page special of readers problems on the latest Philips dvdr`s to see that I`m not the only one.
You are correct, the 880/890 machines were very poor, but I don`t recommend missing Philips just because of that.I have used Philips DVD+,a Panasonic RAM/HDD/-R and am now on a Pioneer HDD/-RW/-R.The Philips DVD+ system is the inferior format. The Philips machines are inferior in every way.The oprating logic is their usual mess, and I like to be able to FF throuh a disc with ease. Not so with Philips. Its 4x(too slow) or 32X(too fast).Great!!And press chapter skip-then wait 2 seconds for it to actually do it.
If you want to play discs on other players go for a Pioneer. They are a bit more expensive than the Philips range(and its el cheapo Chinese clones)but as the saying goes......you get what you pay for.

Good choice.Panasonic recorders are excellent.Their single flaw is not being able to use the rewritable RAM discs on othr players. If that is not a problem you are in for a treat. The E55 is leagues ahead of any Philips recorder
