SKY+ - Do I have an inferior box?

toffeeslot (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 5th May 2004, 08:34

I took up the offer available to employees and friends of getting a `reconditioned box` for £99. Apparently, these were the original boxes that were given out to a couple of thousand people in the London area to test for 12 weeks before SKY+ was officially launched. Obviously I was delighted at getting one for £99, but after going round to my mates house who got his SKY+ last week, I realised that his box is v different. Mine is a lot chunkier, has the LCD `snake` on the left hand side, and the fan is v loud - compared to his, which is a different colour, slimmer and quiet. He also tells me that he can record two programs at the same thime whilst watching another, and when I do this, I have to watch one of the programs that is being recorded. Is this due to the limitations of this early box? Anyone else have similar problems or advice?

Cheers!

You probably have the original design of box, but did get it at a bargain price.
You can record 2 programs at the same time while watching a third prerecorded program - but not while watching a third live sky channel (there are only two tuners available).

By the sounds of it you have also got the old software. Give sky a call and they will take you through the proceedures of updating, takes about 15mins, mine did anyway.

The V1 box has a lot less bad press than the V2 box, even though they are supposed to be identical.
Unplug the box from the mains-wait 20 seconds-plug it back in,but when you do,hold in the `backup` button on the box -not the remote-for up to 20 seconds. In that time a screen should appear telling you the box software is updating. This takes about 10 minutes. However,as you have dual record, you have recent software and this may not improve the fan noise, which seemed to only affect V2 boxes anyway. You may have to just put up with it.While dual recording, watch something recorded earlier from the planner
