Noisy Tosh

Bought a Toshiba sd100 from techtronics, really impressed with pic&sound and the players build quality, BUT, it makes what can only be described as excessive `whirring` noises when first put into play mode.
This also happens when skipping between chapters, although when the player is in play mode it is actually fairly quiet.
This comes as a bit of a surprise as I had not read anything about this `feature` in any of the reviews of the machine. My previous player was a (much cheaper) Wharfedale, which did not make anything like the noise of this Toshiba. Is this the case with all sd100`s or have I got a dud, technical support at techtronics say its a trait of the player and that after a bit you don`t notice it as much, but they would say that wouldn`t they?!
Suggestions...

i had the same problem on my walfdale 750 sent it to the tech support and they told me its the quality of the laser it has problems reading dual layered discs their advise was to send it back and get a new one
apparently its a common problem with `cheaper` models

so now im either going to get a lecson or pioneer 535
which one do u suggest???
