Question for IT Troll / Jimbo

Carrot Cruncher (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 8th March 2001, 03:38

From http://www.lgdvd.co.uk:

Q) Will it now play SVCDs, XVCD or XSVCDs?

A) No and it never will. The specification of one of the decoder chips only supports VCD (thanks Jimbo).

Yes that old chestnut.

I`ve been looking closely at the Decoder boards of both your machines and understand (I think) what all the chips do.
So what is the decoder chip that prevents SVCDs, XVCD or XSVCDs modes?

I`m toying with the idea of getting an LG3350 but only if it can do these modes.

Can you elaborate `why not`, as it was my understanding that the C-Cube ZiVA contained all the required element for SVCD.

Thanx.

Carrot

Dunno. I`m just going on the info Jimbo came up with. Even the `VCD Ready` LG DVD-3351P will not play S/X/XS/VCDs.

It could be that it is just down to firmware again. After all a two character parameter has changed `Disc Error` into `VCD 2.0 compatible`.

Anyways, what`s up with the MICO?

It can`t as far as I know.
There are two chips mentioned in the service manual, but I don`t have a 3350 (yet) to rip apart and check the components.
From what I can see, it has never been activated in the firmware, because as you say, the C-Cube is capable, but the player is not.

I have only tried SVCD however, I have no images of XVCD/SXVCD/MiniDVD to try out, but if they can be sent to me, I`ll happily explore the possibility, but I wouldn`t hold my breath that it`ll work :o(

The LG/Aiwa are stonking DVD players, but no ideas until I get a 3350 about the extra formats

Do we know when LG expect to be shipping in the UK again? I`m getting bored of waiting (nearly 2 months)!

That sounds good. There is probably some hope then. I may delay my decision before buying a new player. Hope its the LG3350!

"Anyways, what`s up with the MICO?"

Waaaaaaaa Waaaaaaaa Waaaaaaaa. Its a TOASTER!

As Duke would put it - it makes crop circles on my discs!

Great news. Still looks like this is worth persuing!

If either of you guys could get these extra modes working, both your machines would slaughter the competition.

Check out http://www.vcdhelper.com
You`ll find all the images you`ll need. A miniDVD image file is lurking somewhere in there too.

Thanx pals. Decisions...decisions...

I have another question for anyone who has purchased a 3350 from techtronics. What cables are supplied with it. i.e. S-Video, Digital Audio/Phonos.

Update: MiniDVD and SVCD now tried and both failed...don`t really see the point of trying Xsvcd.
