Page 1 of AV Amplifiers - info please.

Can you get Prologic DTS and 5.1 on one amplfier? I don`t want to give up surround sound from telly/video, but I would like to move up to 5+ channels.

Also do you get line level outputs as well as speaker outputs? I wanted to share R + L speakers with my proper HI-FI, - although I do know how to attenuate a speaker output for a line level connections to an amplifier.

Yep definately.

if it supports DTS it was support Dolby Digital, and therefore it will support Dolby Surround - yer safe!

as to what outputs you get that varies from amp to amp, i know i want a Yamaha DSP800 as that just powers the surround/centre/sub channels and has line level outs for the front speakers so you can keep using your proper amp for those

More damn fool questions... I know this forum is probably full of people to which all this stuff is second nature - please forgive a novice.

Is the Yamaha DSP E800 as sold by RS for £299 the same animal as the one mentioned? I saw the review on the YAMAHA DSP A5 on this site which seemed quite favourable. I note that that model has pre-outs - is that what you mean and would that be just for R + L front speaker information? I suppose plugging them straight into my power amp would be an ideal solution.

Is it best to simply plug the normal stereo audio outs on the TV into the DSP amp? Presumably the TV volume control may be used then...

DSP - Digital Sound Processing presumably... Why so many modes? Do these `modes` include ProLogic, 5.1, DTS or would they be on top?

DVD Audio - I had not thought of that. I must have a look - but as you say the price does get a bit steep compared to the Yamaha DSP-A5 at £264.

Another thought.

Given that you have an RGB input on your TV, why would want to plug your DVD player into an AV amp via an S-VHS connection? Same goes for an ONdigital `set-top box`.Would any possible improvement in `lip-sync` warrant it?

I can see the point of running a VCR through it however - it ought to save a TV socket should it not (provided you are handling more than one input of course)? On my Sony TV I would need an S-VHS to scart connector though.

Does anyone out there use the video connections on their AV amps?

As a matter of interest and at the risk of going off subject, how many people out there actually balance a set-top box on top of their set?

Had a quick look at the AV toys mags (Home Entertainment, What *)regarding the Yamaha DSP-A5 - they all seem to say it is a good amp "but limited". In what way is it limited? Seems to have most things...except THX.

Still talking to myself apparently ...but

As the Yamaha DSP-A5 has a DAC that can handle 96KHZ does this mean I could play DVD Audio discs on my SC-2000 through it - or would I need to use a different DVD player and/or AV amp?

Just for the record .....i used to have a kenwood prologic...(actually i still do ....but wanna flog it)...i managed to get an Onkyo 777 THX amp for a lil (ok A LOT) off as it was replaced by the 777.
Playing DVDs through it to the tv doesnt seem to make any difference than straight to tv.

Sounds are awsome!.......and yes you "should" be fine playing dvd audio discs, i do, but my player (pioneer 636) has a setting for 48-96 as does the amp?.......(i dont know for sure as i dont use that equipment)

Ive heard good things about the Yammy amp, if you cant stretch yr budget.....go for it.

Thanks. The thing about DVD-AUDIO is that they come with `ordinary` (not >96K ) tracks that may be played with any DVD.

In theory I suppose, the DVD should chuck out 96k from its digital outputs if the right track is selected and the Yamaha will play 96k (albeit only in stereo). But DVD audio is capable of greater than 96k....
