Test this....wait until Terrestiral TV are showing teletext (BBC2 does it often at night), then select your Sky AV channel.
Now look and see if the teletext page is "ghosting" in the background.
If it is, then you have the same problem I had, Pin 19 on the scart is looping the tuner signal through the AV setup, hence the bad picture.
If you put it on a blue screen channel, it`s better, but grainy.
Solution if it is this: snip pin 19!

Another possibility is that the TV scart is outputting RGB, whereas the VCR one isn`t. That would explain the difference in quality (assuming your DVD recorder accepts RGB, that is).

thanks jimbo
can i just make sure that i have made my question clear.
i get brilliant quality using the tv scart output of the sky+ box
I get average quality using the vcr scart output of the sky+ box

I have eliminated the possibility of a dodgy cable and am now left with the possibility of the sky+ box being knackered OR is this normal.

OK, that`s different then, and tbh, VCR`s only record in composite, so Sky probably made all digibox`s, including Sky+ output composite on the VCR scart.
TV scart will be the one capable of carrying RGB.

Test method: If you`re using a DVD recorder with RGB capability, use the TV Scart of the Sky box to the input of the recorder. Look at the quality, and if it`s great, yuo just found the problem! lol

Can`t say I`ve tested this much myself, as I usually do all my recording via the Sky+ itself....almost nothing ever makes it to DVDR.

HTH a bit

Yep. I`ve done a couple of tests, and it seems I was right - the Sky box outputs RGB on the TV scart only. So if your DVD recorder can accept RGB, that will account for the difference.

(Why any manufacturer would produce a DVD recorder that doesn`t have RGB input is beyond me, but that`s another story...)
