What could cause subwoofer distortion?

Jim Morrison (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 15th January 2004, 14:30

On an all in one system I have the subwoofer started to become distorted and sounded like a bad radio transmission. I disconnected the other speakers and listened to it on it`s own, it was very very distorted, which it has never been before.

So I took it back to the shop and they sent it for reapir, but they said there was nothign wrong with it (the subwoofer.) Is it possible that there`s a problem with the main unit? If so, what could be causing such a problem?

Cheers

(I`ve tried different wiring and different rooms but it`s just the same)

posibly a problem with your de-coder if it`s built into the main unit and not the sub

Yes it is.

I phoned up and an engineer is coming out to look at it tomorrow.

Given that the warranty runs out in a week, and that the model is no longer made, would it be worth / possible to replaced the decoder?

Well,

The dude reckons the amp has gone and has taken away the woofer and main unit :(

It sounds ;) like the crossover has failed. This is the bit that filters out the higher (80-100Hz and up) frequencies that upset the sub. This will make the sub sound distoted or get it to make odd noises.

Lucky it went before the guarantee ran out :D . I`d say if it is a coil type they will probably repair it, It is more likely to be part of the amp chip/circuit so would end up cheaper to give you a new model rather than a repair when taking in to account the labour costs of the repair.

All the best

Ger.
