Page 1 of Philips DVDR75

Recently bought a DVDR 75 (from Richer Sounds £220 multi region), this is my first ever DVD player, watched LOTR Two Towers last night, great film. Just a question about the playback of the film. I was getting the film in letterbox, I tried to change the settings on my DVD from 4:3 Letterbox to 4:3 Panscan to 16:9 but there was no effect??

Any advice....Cheers.

Maybe a silly question, but what type of telly do you have? May need to change it`s settings, or use the RGB connection to the television. ;)

The film is only in widescreen on the dvd.If you are watching on a 4:3 set you will get borders top and bottom.
If the film is 1.85:1,it should fill a widescreen completely,but if its 2.35:1,even a widescreen set will still have borders,albeit smaller than on the standard screen

My TV is just a large 4:3 TV. Could I use the zoom option or will this just loose me the edges?

Depending on the zoom modes,a 1.5 should lessen the borders and give you good quality,but anymore than 1.5 zoom and picture will suffer badly-the zoom on dvd players work differently on each model-some only allow zoom in pause-most don`t zoom while in motion

Weird - I also am a first time DVD player owner, having just bought the £220 DVDR 75 from Richer sounds, and own a big old 4:3 telly! And I have had the same problem, and was looking on the internet for a solution.

I borrowed Blade Runner directors cut but could only watch it with huge black bars top and bottom, even though I selected "4:3 Panscan". I looked in the manual, and I think the machine will only do full hieght pictures if the DVD disc itself supports this "panscan" thing.

Have you had any more luck fixing it? Can`t say It`s much of an improvement on video at the moment as effectively the pictures is about half the size, albeit slightly better quality!

Whats up with black bars,I remember in the eighties when BBC2 showed a season of films in widescreen they stoped it because of complaints from viewers,give me black bars and widescreen anytime! :) :)

Having read a few more of the comments on this site, it seems most people would agree with you that seeing the whole widescreen image (presumably as the director intended) in a letterbox is better than "pan scam" (as someone put it).

Having said that, I would like the option to watch the movie at least particially zoomed in, to see the images in a bit more detail (this is possible on my freeview box, I assumed it would be on DVD). Either that or I`ll sit nearer the screen! I need to experiment with some more disks anyway.

Get into the modern age-get a W/S set.
The zoom mode(if you have one) will fill the screen more,but only by chopping the sides off-which is what your Freeview box does-you must have noticed credits,titles etc missing on the edges

Having just bought Sky+ and about to buy a DVD recorder, I just cant afford a W/S set yet :( However I have found that if I sat on the floor, 2 inches from the screen with the sound turned up it was just like watching Eastenders at the Cinema!!

Well - it was until the wife caved the back of my head in with a shoe and I smashed my nose into the tv anyway >:( (Bl**dy Eastenders eh!)
