Page 1 of Have I been ripped off?

This is a simple question but I`m new to the home cinema thing... I have just brought a Sony DAV S 550. The shop insists its a multiregion player, but when i play region 1 dvds it plays them in a stable B&W picture. I assume it is because of the NTSC. Nowhere on the box or in the manual does it say it is multiregion. Therefore, should i assume that because it plays the region 1 dvd it is in fact multiregion and the B&W picture is because of the NTSC incompatibility? Therefore if i get a tv with NTSC compat. everything will be resolved??! Also, I cant view the digital photos i have on CD-R. it simply says it `cant read`. the images are all jpeg.
Anyone help me out here?
please?
Cheers,
unzud

Spot on.
Basically, if the R1 DVD plays at all, then your player is multiregion. If it wasn`t multiregion, it would reject the disc with an error message.
It doesn`t say anything about multiregion in the manual or on the box, because the multiregion feature is an unofficial modification - the player doesn`t come out of Sony`s factory that way! If Sony were allowed to do that, it would defeat the object of having regions in the first place. :)
The B/W picture, as you say, is to do with the NTSC incompatibility of your TV - it has nothing to do with the region coding.
As for the digital photos, I don`t know - what does it say in the manual about showing JPEGs on the DAVS550? What software did you use to burn the discs?

RE: Have I been ripped off?
I had a similar problem with my TV a twin scarted Naiko 28".I altered the output on my player from video to RGB out and got a colour picture via a scart lead.
thanks for the reply mike. a perfect justification for a new tv...!
Re: digital photos. I was told by a sales person at a sony centre that it could play jpeg and mpeg. He seemed to know alot about the system and its features and given it was a sony store i figured he knew what he was talking about... but i`ve since been told by a dixons employee that the DAV S 550 cant play jpegs...!
cheers, unzud
ahem, i hope you didnt pay any more than £249 for it (cos thats what Richer Sounds are doing them for) in which case you have definitely been ripped off :)

The Sony should play VCD so if you use your CD writing software to make a VCD but drag the photos into the program you will be able to view them with your DVD player.
Also just make sure you have the output of your DVD player set to PAL in the setup. Also what make and model is the TV and how old is it?
