Page 1 of Why is my picture black and white?
Hardware Forum
I have a new SONY TV (KV32FX68) and a SONY DAVS500 DVD player(S-video to Scart).
Does anyone know why, when I put the cable from the DVD player into AV1 on the TV, the picture is black and white? Whereas, If I put the same cable into AV2 the picture is in colour.
I thought it might be a problem with the AV1 port - but I tried another DVD player (Toshiba - using scart to scart) in AV1 and it played fine (in colour).
Cheers,
Dave
Sounds like the output signal setting on your DVD.
Sounds like it`s set to either video or S-video, which would explain why it`s black and white on your RGB AV1,yet colour on your AV2.
You need to change the setting to RGB in your set up screen.
Sounds like the other DVD player was already set to RGB.
Oh, I forgot to say.
It may be because you`re using S-video to scart cable
You may not be able to change the signal to RGB.
The machine may assume because you`re using an S-video scart you want an s-video signal. Then again your machine maybe does not do RGB !
If not, you may be stuck with having to use AV2 on your TV.
Don`t worry about it too much as S-video pictures are arguably just as good as RGB.
RE: Why is my picture black and white?
Bowf,
I thought that might be the problem - so I looked through the DVD setup menu but couldn`t find the RGB option.
Does anyone know how to access the RGB option on the SONY DAVS500?
cheers,
Dave
If it doesn`t have a scart, it probably won`t do RGB.
That`s one of the `problems` with all-in-one home cinema systems, which I think yours is.
Sounds like your stuck with it.
Sorry. :(

Its SVideo or Composite only. you`ll have to either continue to use AV2 on the telly or check it`s menus to see if AV1 can be S Enabled....but if memory serves me right, it can`t.

RE: Why is my picture black and white?
When I installed a Sony set up(I think it was the 300)I was shocked to discover that not only did it not have RGB out,but S-video was missing. Its a while since I did it and I cannot remember if there was an S-video socket.
So it looks as if Sony still deny their all in one customers RGB.Your only option is to use S-video to AV2.AV1 will be the RGB Scart socket,if you have Sky Digital you can connect that there.
RE: Why is my picture black and white?
Thanks to everyone who replied!
I rang SONY last night and they confirmed what you all said. I don`t mind using AV2 (S Video) as the picture is still good. However, I live close to a TV transmitter and it seems to cause havoc with every TV in the area - there is a constant `ghost bar` scrolling across the screen.
When I use my Toshiba DVD player in AV1 (Scart to Scart) the bars are barely noticable, and when I use my SONY DVD player (S Video to Scart) the bars are clearly there. I`m not sure why this happens - but it may be the perfect excuse to upgrade!
Thanks again,
Dave
