Tut tut - naughty Akura ! The drought of cheap players at Kwik Save explained..

If anyone was wondering why Kwik Save/Somerfield were having trouble getting stocks of the cheapo Akura DVD player here is the reason why !

Not paying the Dolby Digital licencing fee, eh ?

I wonder whether the price of these players will leap up from £37.49 now ?

Bloody pound of flesh brigade. I wonder when some American corporation`s going to start charging on its DMCA rights over concepts like breathing or using the word "the".

To be fair to Dolby they are only acting within their rights. If people are shipping DVD players with Dolby decoders in and they have not licenced the Dolby Technlogy then they should get what is coming. Dolby licence their product to ensure that products going out with their technology and their logo on meets their standards.

This explains the price crash on certain brands of dvd players.Called dolby this morning and scan players made by ellion are all clear.Phew/!!! thank god. This is similar situation to the licensing problem with phillips.

Good call, nelley, on the CD licencing thing with Philips - that added $10 per player, although a lot of clever Far Eastern manufacturers got round it by removing reference to CD Audio and video CD on the front of their players - hence the sudden increase in players that needed a hack to play VCD.

A lot of cheap players also have DTS decoders on board but dont mention it as this save $10 per player.

I hope not as I am trying to find one of these as a replacement for a Shneider 857 that decided to stop outputting any sound last week and was returned to Asda , and it was 9 months old and straight away no hassle I was offered a cash refund , can`t imagine that happening in the likes of C*rrys D*xons etc more like ok we will send it off for repair and you might get it back before xmas .

I know companies like Dolby have to be profitable, but when licensing adds £10 to the price of an item that`s stifling the market. And to be honest the power that companies wield these days in terms of enforcing their profitability is rather scary.

Yes it probably is but I need a player with 5.1 outputs or am I wrong in believing the Akura has these ? , I have since bought a Maxim mx 11 20 with the 5.1 outputs but it has lip sync problems playing vcd`s and svcd`s ( as mentioned in another thread ) and if I can find an Akura I will get one to see how it compares with the Maxim which is £20 dearer.
